I'm also an estimator of Malzahar mid, one of the stronger lane phase mage in my opinion. It's so funny to play with him, at lvl 7 you can just put E on a minion and go kill the Wraiths meanwhile your Vision is doing your job on clear the minions' wave mid :P
I never thinked of taking Rilay's on Malza, 'cause of the slow reduction to 15% from overseconds damage. But i have to admit that the combination with the effect of Lyandri's is really powerful, so thanks for the tip, i'll try your build in the next games :)
+1
Fantastic guide. I enjoyed reading your guide very much, even learned a few things about mal in the meantime. the only point of contention I have is your description of the Orianna matchup. Ori and mal are my number 1 and number 2 champs respectively and I feel that you underestimate how dangerous an opponent Orianna is for Malzahar. Malzahar has problems with Ori for the same reason that he has problems with Lux -- poke and zoning. Simple as it may sound to not be by the ball; its not exactly like the Ori won't be trying to predict your movements. She has longer range than malzahar and he will eat a ball often when he goes to cast his e on minions. Additionally like Lux, Ori has a powerful shield which negates a large percentage of the e's damage meaning you can't bully her out of lane with it like you can most mids. Finally, once teamfights begin, Command: Shockwave will disrupt your ult assuming its not her you ulted. I love both of these champions dearly, both being in my top three champs, but this matchup is a toss-up that will be determined largely by how cocky ori is with mal's ult.
As stated, my experience against
First, good guide, very complete and kinda fun to read :)
Second, what do u think about adding some spell vamp to possible items (or maybe 1 spell vamp rune)? Some users (especially new ones i think) maybe would like some hp sustain, hextech should be fine for early-mid game if necessary, and built later on gunblade for the extra ad for minions or will of the ancients if team has more ap champions.
Again awesome guide, see ya
I'll have to test out how viable building spell vamp is on
