Builds are very situational. That being said this build makes sense on account of the common practice of the AP mid and the increasing popularity of AP tops. I don't play Ryze enough to make an informed decision.
Spirit Visage doesn't do damage. Get an Infinity Edge and your damage will soar much higher.

Increases the effects of spell vamp, life steal, regeneration or else.. XD so: you'll have more sustain, and you'll also have Mres, health and CD. it's quite good to use it, maybe a little less damage but when you ult you regen like Sion, because of the AoE damage :D
