You wont really play with the set meta until at least level 30, well at least consistently so just follow the tank builds/support builds as close as you can until you hit level 30. Also try to wait off on buying runes till level 20 because tier 1 and 2 runes are **** and you won't be using them once you can get tier 3
also since you won't be as tanky as a level 30 now is the best time to learn how to dodge unless your blocking something from another champion, because it is never a sin for the tank to dodge. just because you can soak up the damage still doesn't mean you want it.

I guess I don't mean build so much as I mean role.
Normally, I've been playing Ziggs and Kog'Maw. Their roles are pretty clear cut to me: kill stuff.
But with tanks, the "push, push, kill, kill" strategy doesn't get you very far.
So I guess my question is, without getting too bogged down in specifics based on the group (since pre-30 solo queues seem to be random and without any real game-planning), what is the role of the tank? Hide in the bushes and set up kills?

the role of the tank is the make sure their "push push kill kill" people arnt killing your "push push kill kill" people
basically tanks make sure everyone stays alive on their team using things like stuns/slows/snares/taunts to keep people of, this is called peeling and is a very important part of the game if youre playing a tank champion

There was a jungler in every single pre-30 game when I was leveling my smurf. (but I queued with friends for some of the early levels).
Depends which tank you're playing, to be honest.
Some tanks are supposed to sit on the enemy "push push kill kill" champions, some are supposed to sit near your team.
Give us an example of who you play.

yeah I made a smurf only level 16, "I only use it when trying out new champions I suck with" but I still get a lot of games from time to time with no jungler so I end up doing it a lot, one of my worst roles so good practice I guess since I end up feeding every time I go jungle. and I'm not

What are some general strategies for a tank playing in a solo-queue, pre-30 match?
