I mean, what else could it be?
The SteamOS and SteamMachines were obviously created to compete with current consoles, a controller is simply the next logical step.

And ofc, lets not forget this quote from the SteamMachines announcement:
"Am I going to be using a mouse and a keyboard in the living-room?
If you want. But Steam and SteamOS work well with gamepads, too. Stay tuned, though - we have some more to say very soon on the topic of input."

In the past there has been talk of a modular controller being in the works, Valve even filed a patent for it. That could be a great idea if done well.
I also hope they make something closer to the Xbox 360/One and Gamecube controllers than at the Playstation controllers. I would be seriously disappointed if the left thumbstick doesn't get primary placement..

I don't know why, but I have a feeling that Steam will very likely find its comfort zone in "lightweight" games (such as Isaac, Meatboy, Dustforce, Hearthstone etc), so I suppose the controller would be something practical and fun to use, instead of a fat one full of buttons :/

Just my 2 cents though, what I said is probably ******** anyway lol

So: yeah.
Called both day 2 and day 3. Feeling pretty good about that :)

Those track pads instead of thumbsticks... I'm not sure if I like that. Actually I'm almost certain I won't like that. I always have trouble with track pads, and I think it'll be weird to have to keep the fingers pushed on them hard enough, and not sweep out of them. I wonder what will be the default behavior if it does happen: keep on like it's still pressed or reset?

And please, mr. Newell, I DO NOT want to swipe through the menus. If I hold my finger at the right, then please let it just keep on scrolling... Not that they announced it, but I'm just feeling trouble.

The controller sure looks pretty though.

Wait, maybe you're thinking of a different technology here. These trackpads use the same method of locating touches as modern touchscreens, i.e: building up electrical charge which when touched by a finger or something is discharged and shows where the touching is happening. On these things you simply have to be in contact with the surface for it to react to your touch.
It's not like the older tech where there are two separate layers with different charge that need to be pushed together to register (you have to physically push down on such screens for them to register, I think the old Nintendo DS was like that).

Not sure if that's what you meant though..

Actually, swiping through long menus (like the 100 items you're carrying in Skyrim or something like that) is significantly faster than holding a thumbstick down.

I was indeed thinking of the old NDS, thanks for the explanation. The controller's gotten a lot more interesting to me now ^^

Disagree.
If they adapt the speed of scrolling to the position of the thumbstick, the thumbstick method can be much faster.
Kinda like how they've done it in the PS3 OS.

Nope, still not even close to the precision and speed you have in scrolling with a touchscreen.

I blurted out loud, in a dead silent theater full of teenage girls on opening night "Wait a minute, Edward has no blood flow. How does he get an erection?" I heard several men laughing, and had several girls turn and stare at me.

I did not get laid that night." - Berengier817
