You used to lock the car, by pressing in the lock on the inside of the door, then closing the door. Yes one can still use the key on the drivers side, but it's a habit many people have learned over the years and it sticks. Press button, close door. It's just easier and more efficient that way. Down side is that one can lock the key inside this way. Up side is, cars of this age can be opened relatively easy with a long stiff wire. I'm trying to avoid owning a car for as long as I can to avoid all the costs that come with them. I ride my bike 4miles to school almost every day. Good exercise and saves a ton of money.
