But some of the queue times for the high dia- challenger players are ridiculous (20 min sometimes), so what are they expected to do? I know a few streamers play hearthstone in between, is this not allowed?
now all they get to do is go and get pizza while waiting for queue
then all of the new athletes with their new sports contracts are going to be obese from all the pizza breaks they have before their games rather than playing something else

The youthful ignorance in this thread is strong.
Riot is still a company.
And companies do not like it when their partners/employees actively promote the competition.
Or did you guys really think the 'pro' players wouldn't have to make sacrifices when the game turned into a real sport, making them actual professional players?
How naïve......

that's the thing. Riot is treating eSports like a company when it isn't.Every other Sports association I can think of is just that, an association between multiple clubs to come together and organize the competition of professional teams. Most of the rules that these associations place on the clubs beneath them revolve around fair play: Drug usage and prohibitions, how much and how intense contact is allowed, how often the players play, team rosters and how many people are allowed at one time, and penalties for breaking these rules.
"Players of the National Basketball Association are not allowed to show support for the National Football League by attending games, buying merchandise, or publicly endorsing any teams or players of the NFL through social media or press media"
Now that is just ridiculous. why wouldn't someone be able to support something they liked that was outside of there job? Pro players come out and support players from the other sports all the time. I am sure every professional will watch and support their teams in the world cup. THe Olympics are coming up and I am sure professionals will do the same.
whether or not Riot is a company isn't the issue. we've all pretty much said that Riot is not wrong in making a decision like this. Most of us are saying that it is a wrong move for an association to take, which is what eSports should be. not a business like Riot is treating it like.
Tbh, comparing sports to League of Legends would not really be a good comparison in this case. Riot OWNS League of Legends while no one really owns sports. There is no one in the world that owns basketball or soccer or whatever.
Riot is a bussiness and they must do their best to promote their product. If the top-representatives of the league community, pro players, would show they have more interest in other games than with League, that could have negative effects on Riot. If, for example, all pro players suddenly play hearthstone on their streams instead of league then all the attention that League has will shift to hearthstone. This could cause a drastic shift in popularity.
And the only problem that this decision might cause is that followers of pro players streams will have less variaty to look at. However, pro players can still play what the hell they want, they just wont get funded if they stream that. So imo, it is perfectly reasonable that Riot does what they do.
EDIT: Oh sorry GMD, you don't know what soccer is. Here is an helpful link:

Is it seriously that hard?
That aside, point made is valid. Riot is protecting their sport and pro players are paid to stream League and not paid to stream Hearthstone. No one is telling them not to buy hearthstone or not to play Starcraft II, they're just told not to stream that.

But they aren't being paid to stream. they are paid to compete.
It's not that hard to understand. It has to do with exposure of the product, and streaming is a big enough media that they need to worry about what the players THEY PAY decide to show the world.
It's very simple. You don't want the people you sponsor supporting, even indirectly, your competition.
