I got some problems against Irelia, lately. Fact is, the girl, just like Olaf, deals true damage with W and she will usually build phage to dash and stick to you while hitting with that skill up. Do you have tried to build health first against her, even in the form of a ruby crystal start?
Keep up the good work, and when you can add a Yasuo matchup :D (though i have faced him more than once and i don't think it's big deal. If he jumps on you, he can't sustain your E, and if you dodge it's vortex, he is a sitting duck.)!
I've been meaning to update the adversaries section to add Quinn, Pantheon and Ryze because I'm seeing them top quite often these days. Thing is that Riot as issued so many patches, it's hard to keep up with all the changes and update your guides accordingly. I'll try to add some adversaries soon and keep you posted on those.
Now as for the fact that people assume Olaf is a jungler, I think it's because about 6-8 months ago, pros on the LCS started using him there. Since Olaf is not well known, hence not a popular champ, people associate him to that role. Since then, the pros have drifted away from that strategy and I agree with them (you can clearly see why in my jungle section). I honestly think that Olaf is a top laner first and "maybe" a jungler second. No other roles fit him well (unless a Zed or Talon is mid and you want to counter them hard).
Thanks for your great comments, I appreciate it :) Just +Rep you!
Now on to my question for you, do you have any plans on updating your Lane Adversaries section because lately I've been getting set up against certain champions that I've been looking for advice on how to play against, where I'm just unable to find anything. And for the list of Champions I was hoping to get advice on how to lane against, and I have laned against them:
Jarvan, Heimerdinger (Yes, Heim was top lol), Pantheon (His spears destroyed me), Kha, Trundle, Vi, and Xin. And also, I am being serious with this one, I was laning against another Olaf and I pretty much lost. Now I could tell from our stats that we had different runes and masteries, but basically, how do you counter Olaf as Olaf? lol.
In that list, some of the champions I did fairly good against, while others, not so good. Anyways I was hoping to see if you could put those in the Section, unless there is a reason.
Thank you.
Sorry about the late reply, your post was at the bottom of the page and I initially missed it.
I still like the lifesteal quints on Olaf to have some lifesteal whithout needing your W. There are some alternatives that seem better in comparison because of the nerf but I'd still go with lifesteal to capitalize 1vs1 (if you time your W and ulti correctly as I stated in the guide).
Since they added Feral Flare I have one additional reason to not like Olaf as a jungler. Feral Flare helps jungle assassins imo. It is really good on Kha Zix, Master Yi and even Lee Sin I think. Even Udyr because of his stun can benefit from Feral Flare. With Olaf, it's not as easy. The on-hit heal will help but because you are not an assassin and because I think Olaf is better as an Off-Tank or pure Tank, I don't see much use on him for that item. Remember my item order: Tank First, Power second. With Feral Flare, you HAVE TO begin with this item in order to stack it. That's opposite to my strategy which revolves around a punishing E with lots of sustain.
I clearly stated that I don't like Olaf as jungler, there are many more choices more suitable to that role than Olaf. Plus, even the "pros" that started this trend of using Olaf as a jungler have since moved away from that strategy in masses. I say use him as a top laner in favorable matchups and you'll do great. You want to use feral flare and stack it until you're a destructive force, take an AD jungler like Vi, Kha Zix, Udyr, Master Yi, Tryndamere, Lee Sin or Nocturne for example and have fun.
That's just my opinion though.
Have fun and good luck top lane!
Thanks for the vote of confidence and the nive compliments about my guide, I appreciate it :)
I agree with your notes about masteries and will consider updating the guide accordingly. That being said, with the Doran Shield nerf, I've been buying the blade instead recently with relative success. Since I'm starting more aggressively, maybe more changes are needed in the masteries, I'll look into that. Ruby Cristal as a first item with 2 potions is also decent if Teleport was picked as a summoner. That way, if you engage and get too low without your W yet, you can recall and tele back to lane quickly and not miss too much XP or gold.
Riot released patch-7 recently, I'll try to revisit the guide and see if it needs more adjustments.
Good luck in your games!
I have some concern with the masteries tho. I saw you insisted on the importance of the doran's shield damage reduction early, so why not take the unyielding mastery? I may be wrong, but i feel like this would be more worthy than the "strength of spirit" one.
And also, isn't the "legendary guardian" better ? I feel like it would be better when you want to run into their team to get to their carry, but once again, I may be wrong.
Anyway, great guide, and thanks for this great guide, I swear I will now look more in depth before saying a champ is useless when i'm not doing good with it.
