Assassin? She used to be more of mixture of Mage and Assassin, but after charm changes it's more or less "Get DFG, Assassinate opponent carry in the fight, GTFO".
I used to play her more of "Do as much damage to as many targets as possible, use ult to reposition to get bruiser out of your face, help to peel for adc." What I feel is that now with charm and damage changes it's more of bursting carry from back line and using mobility to get there/get out which is kinda exactly what assassins do.
Don't know if there is some official definitions or you have some different, but usually I just call champions that "dive in, burst carry, GTFO" assassins and champions that "provide more of dps and stay in the back line positioning similar to adc" mages.
How I see it is that currently with Ahri playing her as assassin is more beneficial and uses her kit much more efficiently. Similar thing you might do with champions like LeBlanc/Kha'Zix etc.
Examples for mages in my eyes would be Ziggs, Anivia and Orianna.

I think at LCS etc. she was mostly used as assassin. Especially Faker did this. Altough I remember few of Froggens and Forellenlords games where they preferred more of mage type of style.
To be honest I remember prefect quote about Ahri, which don't probably aren't that great anymore but at time when damage wasn't focused around charm this was perfect description about how to play her. "Ahri is mage-assassin, she shouldn't be played like actual mage or assassin.". But that's kinda gone now.
It's true though that she was mostly used as assassin in high level. Faker and xPeke for example preferred highly assassin type of play. Closest to being something between mage and assassin I remember Forellenlord doing. But anyways both ways used to be more or less viable.
Realized now though what you were talking about Jimmy... Have forgotten that myself totally and dindn't even notice it when uploaded pictures...
There was reddi post at time which showed how you can change your divisions name to anything you want... You can imagine the rest. That shows to only yourself though, I mean obviously. But still. ^^
So this is me now. Got Bird to the 4k like I always do. Also I got to promos from gold to plat, will be though. I'm kinda scared to play right now though, since Vel'Koz just popped up and that's completely unfamiliar matchup to me.
What else.. Haven't played Kayle since Q nerf. Not sure if I should continue playing Teemo after shroom nerf, have 7-0 currently played before it. Morgana would be interesting mid laner. Also I'm trying to get Veigar to work. Currently I feel like it's kinda 50-50, should get better with experience though.
Also see that pantheon there? I won that game. Playing Jungle 8th or 9th time in my life. First time since Silver V. Had extremely nice and supportive team though. :)

-Get to lolskill toplist for Anivia at EUW. (Currently requires 4546 skillscore or higher for her)
So thought I would update a little bit. Like be seen in previous post my goals for season 4 was to get plat and get to Anivia toplist.
For the first one I did manage to do that. Here is pick taken around that time.
For top list this is as far as I got with skillscore.
After hitting plat 5 I started to stop caring about soloQ and use it as pracitce environment for builds and champions, which took me all the way back to gold 2. Also after dropping from plat I started to focus on other league related things besides playing myself a bit and when I play myself play seriously it's mainly on team ranked.
I feel like soloQ is playing game wrong way and started using it more of as a practice ground for builds and bringing new champions to my pool. Also as seen below the reason why I preferred team ranked besides of proper gameplay mechanics was the fact that you get much higher level of opponents there. While examples below are wins obviously there was also a lot of losses. Remember one diamond 2 Syndra making mid lane that is usually comfortable place for me to complete torture.
This poor soul though LeBlanc can all in Anivia pre 6 because it's LeBlanc, right? Well that's not how it works.

Role Preference.
So basically I'm trying to get Mid lane whenever possibly. If not, then support/adc. Then top. I used to prefer top pretty strongly, but my champ pool kinda got ****ed up there. Vladimir, Jayce and Jax aren't in very strong position right now. Have 5wins 0losses with Teemo though, so I got that going for me which is nice. I bought Caitlyn and I'm planning to focus more on adc/support after mid lane.
From silver 2 to gold 1.
So this rising has been pretty rapid. Sifting away from assassin meta really helped me a lot. After my placement matches I got placed into silver 2. After few losses there I started winning streak which continued all the way to promos for gold 5. There I lost my first game for long long time having to play against previous season diamond. Still got trough promos and continued winning streak next loss being at promos again. Despite loss I got trough promos and skipped gold 4 getting into gold 3. Today I played my gold 3 promo's and skipped division again getting into gold 1. I currently have win rate of 64.7% with Ziggs and 75% with Kayle. I wonder if I should tryhard for platinium or just chill.
What to play?
So basically Kayle got stomped. Fck riot. Just like Jayce used to be for me. Just as I start to like something it gets nerfed. Currently I feel like most options for mid lane mages are problematic. Ziggs being absolutely top one at the moment. Orianna is other legit. Bird is always option for me. But then what? I can't really justify playing lux currently. Twisted Fate is kinda between lux and bird, kinda nice but yet meh. I'm thinking something like Nidalee or Morgana. Also Veigar is something I'm planning to take under my wing for sure.

Yeah. Sounds weird, I know. So basically I made low level account to help someone who's new and being able to play in games with her. Then I got great idea. What I'm planning to do is to only buy assassins at first to that account. So Kha'Zix, Akali, Talon, LeBlanc, Kassadin, Fizz and Ahri. Then build up my ability to play assassins that way. Have any of you ever done anything like that? How did that go?

So ranked 5's team where I was playing kinda broke up when season 4 started since few of our guys wanted to keep few months pause because of school work. That's kinda sad and currently I'm trying to find team where I could play mid lane. Obviously nothing too serious, not trying to be pro or anything like that, but I just like actual ranked team more than soloQ since you can communicate with everyone and there's no fight over roles etc. Also no flame assuming you have found good team where you feel comfortable. That leaves you to have only positive sides of the game. You are able to focus on improving and trying your best.
