He was a new player.

On a side note, my platinum IV friend played his season 4 ranked and got placed into gold 3 with a 6/10 record.

It depends on your MMR (if you win games in a row then lose games, but not in a row, you'll have good MMR, this counts for placements too) and if you had a rating last season it gets a soft reset, so plats and diamonds get placed pretty high (generally) and golds stay in gold, rarely low platinum and often times in silver.

@BlueArtist, so either your friend had bad MMR in season 3 or in placements (lost in a row, won out of row), otherwise he'd get placed higher; even though p4 > g3 isn't bad.

This is going to be based more on my Xbox Live understandings of rankings, Halo 3 in particular, but I ma sure some of this will translate over since I have seem in work in a similar fashion. A key difference is that you start in the middle (Based on these numbers) as opposed to the bottom in Halo 3.

Either way when you start out, your rank can easily be changed. Losing will do two things: it will lower your rank a set amount, and it will make your rank harder to move. Winning inverses these things. Although both of these tend to be slight they are also based on variables like opposing MMR and allied MMR. Basically, upsets will change rank more than if the projected winner is the actual winner.

I am a Silver V player. So when I placed at the beginning of the season, I went 6-4 and was placed in Bronze I. but because 10 games isn't enough to change much in the way of how ranks will change, I was able to get to silver V within a couple weeks. I kept climbing up a bit and about halfway up Silver IV, I started losing more consistently and slid back down to the V I'm at now, which is normal. Although during the preseason I peaked at Silver III, but then again my climb at that time was from Bronze IV, meaning more wins and more momentum to stop.

Basing this Logic on OP's statement, you probably won 4 or 5 right away before taking a loss.

So that brings me to another question... does team average MMR affect league points gain/loss? Hypothesis is that if your enemy has higher MMR you gain more league points if you win.

What I understand of it, MMR is all what counts. If your MMR is higher than the MMR required for your current division(Riot knows what that is), you will gain tons of LP for a win and lose little. If your MMR is lower than the requirement for your division you will gain nothing and lose tons.

I wasn't expecting to getting somewhere, maybe Bronze. Didn't actually think I would win 6 games because of the rumours about "EloHell". In my placement I've lost 0/4 games, the reason is about me being confused on what I was doing and Marksmans being brandead (When I was playing Support). Need to calm down before I'm starting to play ranked game, or I'll stab someone :p

Thanks for explaning about how the MMR is working, helped me alot.
