Just to add my two cents, I am really disappointed with the Pantech Jest I have currently. I'm going to replace it soon (thank god) as it is perhaps the worst phone I have ever owned.

Yeah, wow, that was bad even back in 2010.
It's about as advanced as a brick and has up to 5hours talk time? And people today are complaining about 14hours not being good enough..

The phone in that link looks slightly different from mine. Odd. Mine is a Pantech Jest 2, oops.

I got mine in...2013, I think? I don't recall exactly when. I had a Samsung Intensity 2 previous to that (which wasn't great, but at least it didn't have near the issues the Jest has), but when I upgraded my phone the only two free options were what I have and a knock-off of the Intensity 2. I gather the other option (which my brother opted for) isn't any better.

I'm buying a phone this time. **** that ****.

Any non-smartphone suggestions? I'm not inclined to double my phone bill unless I have to. I'd just get one and not have a data plan, but Verizon requires you buy a data plan with smartphones now because a bunch of idiots didn't realize they had to pay for a data plan to use the internet browser on their smartphones without extra charges and then sued. x.x

Before someone tells me to get a different mobile phone provider, let me point out that Verizon is really the only reasonable option. The other provider option (AT&T) doesn't have nearly as consistent coverage out here in the middle of nowhere.

Skimming through and giving out my 2cents.

Atm I am using a Xiaomi Mi2s.
An Android Device with its own Android theme called MIUI.
For people too lazy to google:

It's only 4,3" so it is not too small like the i**** 5/5s and not too big like the one**** one 5".
Jk, not really hating on onePlus, just on ****apple.

Currently using CyanogenMod 11 with Android 4.4.4 on my Mi2s. And it is working great.
Only problem right now is the battery. I am not entirely sure if it's just because of my usage in university or because of the custom rom, but it seems to go down relatively fast. Especially, when I am not even using the phone. (Probably looking for WLAN/Mobile Network). Tho my mate's Nexus 4 (basically same kernel as Mi2s, which is why Mi2s will most likely get updates as long as Nexus 4 gets em) has almost the same battery usage.

CM is definitely worth using, if you want the vanilla Android with only the minimalistic personal change that you can choose.

The only thing I hate about this is its build in music equalizer / player. Just meh..

Just buy a Motorola Moto G2 (2014 model). It's ridiculously good value and cheap enough to buy off contract: 179$.
With good smartphones being as cheap as that there's no reason to opt for what often is a bad feature(dumb) phone. If you're 100% set on a dumbphone then Doro makes good phones, but consider the fact that you get a significantly better pocket camera(you might as well not bother using the camera in dumbphones), not to mention a decent pocket computer with a smartphone.

The problem with getting a smartphone isn't the cost of the phone, it's the fact that my phone bill would more than double because I'm required to buy a data plan.

No it wouldn't.
If you buy a smartphone separately then you won't need to bother with anything other than popping your SIM-card into the new phone. You might need to go to a store and ask for a micro-SIM tho, if you aren't up for cutting your current SIM so it'll fit (yes, you can cut it yourself).

ALL you need is a SIM card from Verizon. Then you can pop it into whatever phone you want to.

I'm just going on what they told me when I asked about it recently, because I was considering just buying a phone from a third party. I even have access to a blackberry (for free) that I wouldn't mind just using as a normal phone (because I am cheap as ****), but they won't let me activate it unless I pay for a data plan.

Just take the ****ing card and put it in the damn phone. Does it work? Great, now go tell Verizon to **** off. (most telecom companies in the US are ****)

If the SIM-card doesn't fit in the Blackberry then either cut it according to this guide:
http://www.technobuffalo.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/microSIM_to_nano_SIM_iPhone_5_guide.png
Or go to a store and ask for a new SIM-card (check which one you need and then ask for that).
If Verizon asks you why you want one then say that you lost yours or that it stopped working. Otherwise there is the risk of being being lying *******s.

I'll try it, I guess. I'm a little leery though. Can you get in trouble for that?

Not a chance. They'd have to go against the law to do something like that.

Just make sure the Blackberry supports the Verizon network frequencies.
