Cassiopeia
Cassiopeia is a hard counter. Her Q gives movement speed, her E heals and deals damage, and her R stuns you. Your advantage is that her Q has a cooldown. You beat Cassiopeia by building Mercury's Treads and BORK. This matchup is 30/70 in Cassiopeia's favor.

Champion Build Guide
Irelia is best picked into squishy ranged champions (mid lane) or tanks that can't burst her (top lane). She struggles against champions who can cancel her Q dash (Poppy W) or out-burst her before she can stack her passive. Your ban should be Poppy every game if you're playing top lane, or Malphite if Poppy is already banned. Irelia Mid currently has a 46.4-49.18% win rate with a 1.2% pick rate and 6.4% ban rate in Emerald+ on Patch 26.16, while Irelia Top sits at a 49.0% win rate with a 1.8% pick rate. She is currently ranked A Tier in the mid lane and S Tier in the top lane.
Minion Dancing: Your Q (Bladesurge) resets its cooldown when it kills a target. This means you can dash through an entire minion wave in under 2 seconds, healing and stacking your passive with every dash. A good Irelia player uses minions as stepping stones to gap-close, dodge skillshots, and set up her E stun.
Passive Stacking: Your passive (Ionian Fervor) grants bonus attack speed that stacks up to 4 times. At max stacks, you deal bonus on-hit magic damage. This is where most of your damage comes from. You never fight without full stacks unless you are absolutely forced to.
Sidelane Domination: Irelia is one of the best split-pushers in the game. She takes towers quickly, wins 1v1s against almost every champion, and can 1v2 or even 1v3 when played correctly. Your job is to pressure the sidelane so hard that the enemy team is forced to send multiple people to stop you, creating advantages for your team elsewhere.
Strengths:
Excels at all-ins
Excels with items that enhance attack speed, on-hit effects, and survivability
Has a lot of outplay potential with Q
Has a natural spike in threat every time passive is fully stacked and when there are minions nearby
Weaknesses:
Significantly harder to play from behind
Struggles against magic damage, as W only reduces half as much magic damage as it does physical damage
Weaker when passive isn't fully stacked, and can be abused during that time
Q – Bladesurge: Irelia dashes to a target, dealing physical damage and applying on-hit effects. If the target dies, Bladesurge's cooldown is refunded and its mana cost is restored. Q's cooldown also resets on marked targets (from E or R). Deals bonus damage to minions. Cooldown: 12/11/10/9/8 seconds. This is your mobility, your waveclear, your sustain, and your damage all in one ability. You max this first.
W – Defiant Dance: Irelia assumes a defensive stance with her blades, charging up for up to 1.5 seconds. She gains damage reduction (reduced physical and magic damage) while charging. The channel cannot be interrupted by hard CC; only Irelia can end it early. On release, she deals magic damage in a cone. Cooldown: 16/15/14/13/12 seconds. This is your defensive tool, your waveclear, and your surprise burst damage. You max this second.
E – Flawless Duet: Irelia readies 2 blades that will fly towards each other once placed, dealing magic damage and stunning enemies hit for 0.75 seconds. Enemies hit are marked. Marked enemies take bonus magic damage when hit by Bladesurge and cause Bladesurge to reset its cooldown. Cooldown: 18/16.5/15/13.5/12 seconds. This is your engage, your outplay tool, and your setup for Q resets on champions. You max this last.
R – Vanguard's Edge: Irelia fires a massive number of blades that explode outward upon hitting an enemy champion. The blades form a wall that lasts 2.5 seconds. Enemies who pass through R's blades take damage and are slowed by 90% for 1.5 seconds. Enemies hit are marked. Cooldown: 120/100/80 seconds. This is your teamfight engage, your pick tool, and your way of applying marks to multiple enemies for Q resets.
Leveling Order: R > Q > W > E. Q max first for mobility, waveclear, and damage. W max second for damage reduction and burst damage. E max last because the stun duration doesn't increase with ranks.
Q Reset on Minions: Your Q resets when it kills a target. This means you can dash through an entire wave. The trick is to auto-attack each minion once so they're low enough for Q to execute. The rhythm is: Auto melee minion → Q → Auto caster → Q → Auto caster → Q → Auto caster → Q. You now have 4 stacks and you've healed from each Q. This is called "setting up the wave."
Q Reset on Champions: Your Q also resets on champions who are marked by your E or R. The combo is E → stun → Q (reset) → Auto → Q (reset) → Auto. You can dash to a marked champion, auto, dash again, auto, dash again. This is how you stick to mobile champions.
W Damage Reduction: Your W reduces both physical and magic damage while charging. This is your secret weapon in duels. Use it to absorb burst damage (Zed R, Syndra R, Garen R) and then release it for damage. Do not just use W for damage – the damage reduction is often more valuable.
E Placement: Your E has a 0.75-second delay before the blades converge. You can place the first blade behind you and the second blade on top of the enemy. This makes it harder for them to dodge because they don't see the first blade. This is called a "hidden E" and it's the mark of a good Irelia player.
R Wall: Your R creates a wall that slows enemies who try to cross it. Use it to trap enemies in the jungle, cut off escape routes, or zone enemies off objectives. The marks from R also give you Q resets on champions.
Level 1: Start Q. Do not fight. Last-hit with auto attacks and use Q only to secure cannons. Let the enemy push if they want to. Your goal is to set up the wave for a level 2 all-in.
Level 2: Take E. This is your first power spike. The combo is: Auto a minion to low health → Q to it (stack) → Auto another minion → Q to it (stack) → Auto a third minion → Q to it (stack) → E (stun the enemy) → Auto → Q onto the enemy (marked, resets) → Auto. This is 4 stacks, a stun, and 3 Q dashes in under 3 seconds. It kills most squishy champions or forces Flash.
Level 3: Take W. Your full combo is now available. The pattern is the same as level 2, but now you have W to absorb their retaliation damage or finish them off. Look for windows when the enemy uses a key ability on the wave – Lux throws E to clear? You all-in.
Levels 4-5: Continue to stack passive on waves and look for all-ins. Your Q makes you extremely hard to gank because you can dash to minions to escape. Always keep a low-health minion behind you as an escape route.
Level 6: Your ultimate is up. This is your biggest power spike. The combo is: R onto the enemy → Q (marked, resets) → Auto → E (stun) → Auto → Q (marked, resets) → Auto → Q → W. This is a full 4-stack combo with 3 Q resets and a stun. It kills almost anyone from 70% health.
Early Game Summary: You are looking to stack your passive, set up the wave, and all-in at level 2, 3, and 6. Irelia's strength relies heavily on winning the lane phase and building an early lead.
Sidelane Pressure: After the first tower falls, you move to the sidelane opposite the next objective (bot for Dragon, top for Baron). You push the wave, take towers, and force the enemy team to respond. If they send one person, you kill them. If they send two, your team fights 4v3 on the other side of the map.
Hullbreaker: This is your best friend in the mid game. It gives you armor, magic resist, and bonus damage to towers when no allies are nearby. You become a tower-taking machine.
Roaming: Irelia's roams are strong because she can engage with R and follow up with Q resets. Look for bot lane roams when your ultimate is up. Walk into the river, R onto the enemy ADC, and clean up.
Objective Fights: For Dragon or Baron fights, you do not front-line. You stay in a flank position. Wait for the enemy team to commit, then R onto the backline from the fog of war. Your R wall traps them, and your Q resets let you dance through their team.
Mid Game Summary: You push sidelanes, take towers, and force the enemy to respond. You do not group mid and ARAM. You create pressure elsewhere.
The Flanking Rule: Never walk into a teamfight from the front. Always approach from the side or from behind. Your goal is to find the enemy ADC or support and delete them before the fight truly begins.
R Engage: Your R is your engage tool. Throw it onto the enemy backline, slow them, and mark them. Then Q onto the marked target, auto, E to stun, Q again, auto, Q again. You will bounce through their team like a pinball.
W for Survival: Use your W to absorb burst damage during teamfights. If you see a Zed R or a Syndra R coming, press W. The damage reduction will save your life.
The Cleanup Role: If you are not able to get a flank, you wait. Wait for the fight to break out. After the enemy has blown their major cooldowns, you enter and clean up the low-health targets with your Q resets.
Teamfight Summary: Flank, R onto the backline, use W to survive, and clean up with Q resets.
High Elo (Diamond 2+): Irelia Mid has a ~49.18% win rate. Irelia Top has a ~49.0% win rate. She is picked as a counter to tanks and immobile mages. The Conqueror bruiser build (BORK → Kraken Slayer → Death's Dance) is the most common. She is not blind-picked as often because Malphite and Poppy counter her hard.
Mid Elo (Platinum to Diamond 2): Irelia Mid has a ~47.3% win rate. Players are less likely to punish her weak level 1, so she snowballs more often. The standard build is BORK → Kraken Slayer → Death's Dance.
Low Elo (Gold and below): Irelia has a stronger win rate. Players do not respect her passive stacks and fight her inside her minion wave. She is a terror in low elo.
Current Bans: Poppy (cancels your Q with W), Malphite (armor stacking and attack speed slow), and Sett (out-bursts you in lane). Ban Poppy every game if you're playing top lane, or Malphite.
Current Patch Notes Affecting Irelia: No direct changes to Irelia in Patch 26.16. Irelia Mid is currently D Tier with a 46.4% win rate, 1.2% pick rate, and 6.4% ban rate. Irelia Top is C Tier with a 49.0% win rate, 1.8% pick rate, and 6.1% ban rate.
You take Conqueror when you want maximum sustained damage and healing in extended fights. This is Irelia's default keystone in over 85% of games because her Q and auto-attacks stack it quickly – a full combo of Q → Auto → Q → Auto → E → Auto → Q gives you max stacks in under 3 seconds. At full stacks, you're healing for 8% of your damage and dealing bonus adaptive damage, which allows you to out-sustain almost every champion in the sidelane.
Precision primary gives you Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, and Last Stand. Triumph keeps you alive through multi-kill situations. Legend: Alacrity gives you bonus attack speed, which synergizes perfectly with your passive – more attack speed means faster stacking and more on-hit damage. Last Stand turns you into a monster in low-health duels.
Secondary tree is Inspiration with Triple Tonic and Jack of All Trades. Triple Tonic gives you three potions that provide bonus stats at levels 3, 6, and 9 – this is invaluable for early lane sustain and all-in power. Jack of All Trades gives you bonus adaptive force based on how many unique stats you have.
You run this setup into almost every matchup. It is never the wrong choice.
CONQUEROR + RESOLVE (SECOND WIND + BONE PLATING) – THE POKE SURVIVAL PAGE
You take Conqueror with Resolve secondary featuring Second Wind and Bone Plating when you're against heavy poke champions who will chip you down before you can stack your passive. Second Wind synergizes perfectly with Irelia's trading pattern – you take a poke spell, back off, and regenerate a portion of that health over the next ten seconds. Bone Plating blocks burst damage from all-ins.
Your secondary Resolve tree should also include Unflinching for tenacity. This page is mandatory into dedicated poke champions like Jayce, Kennen, or Vayne top. You are not looking to solo kill these lanes early – you're looking to survive until level 6, stack your passive on minions, and then all-in them with your ultimate.
CONQUEROR + DOMINATION (SUDDEN IMPACT + TREASURE HUNTER) – THE SNOWBALL PAGE
You take Conqueror with Domination secondary when you are confident you can snowball your lead and want maximum kill pressure. Sudden Impact gives you lethality and magic penetration after every Q dash – this is perfect for Irelia because you're constantly dashing. Treasure Hunter gives you bonus gold on unique takedowns, accelerating your item spikes.
You run this setup into melee matchups where you have kill pressure – Yone, Yasuo, Sylas, and Zed in the mid lane. You are looking to snowball your lead by killing your laner repeatedly and then roaming. Do not take this into poke matchups – you need Second Wind to survive.
VETERAN NOTE ON IRELIA RUNES
Conqueror is always the best keystone. There is no situation where Press the Attack or Lethal Tempo outperforms Conqueror on Irelia. Your extended fights and Q resets mean you will always stack Conqueror fully. The choice is in your secondary tree. Inspiration (Triple Tonic + Jack of All Trades) is the default and the highest winrate. Resolve (Second Wind + Bone Plating) is for poke matchups. Domination (Sudden Impact + Treasure Hunter) is for snowballing. Do not overcomplicate it. Conqueror + Inspiration in 80% of your games.
You take Flash and Ignite when your primary win condition is solo killing your lane opponent and snowballing the game off your own lead. This is the default summoner spell page for Irelia in over 80% of matchups. Flash is non-negotiable – you need it to dodge crucial CC, escape ganks, reposition during fights, and gap-close when your Q is on cooldown. Ignite provides the extra burst damage to secure kills through healing and gives you kill pressure from level 2 onward.
Flash + Ignite enables your level 2 and level 3 all-in windows. The combo is: Stack 4 passive on minions → Flash onto the enemy → Auto → Q → Auto → E → Auto → Q → Ignite. The Ignite damage often makes the difference between a kill and the enemy walking away with 50 health.
You run this setup into almost every matchup where you have kill threat before level 6. Champions like Yone, Yasuo, Sylas, Zed, and most ranged squishies fall into this category. The only times you avoid Flash + Ignite are when you're against a champion you cannot possibly kill in lane (Poppy, Sett, Malphite) or when you're playing into a heavy poke comp where Teleport gives you more value through lane sustain.
FLASH + TELEPORT – THE SPLIT PUSH / SCALING SETUP
You take Flash and Teleport when your primary win condition is split pushing and map pressure. Teleport on Irelia is extremely effective because she is one of the best split-pushers in the game. It allows you to take a bad trade, recall for health and an item component, and Teleport back to lane without missing a wave. More importantly, it enables you to split push a side lane in the mid-game, draw pressure, and then Teleport into the upcoming Dragon or Baron fight.
Flash + Teleport also opens up advanced macro plays. You can push bot wave past river, recall, and Teleport top to catch the next wave while your team pressures mid. You become a wave management monster. The tradeoff is that you lose significant kill pressure in lane – you will not solo kill a competent opponent without Ignite.
This setup is best into lanes you cannot kill regardless of Ignite – champions like Poppy, Sett, Malphite, or Ornn. You are not killing these champions in a fair 1v1, so you pivot to wave management and split pushing. You also take it into coordinated high-elo games (Diamond 2+) where the enemy team will respect your Ignite and play safe.
VETERAN NOTE ON IRELIA SUMMONER SPELLS
Below Diamond, you take Flash + Ignite every single game. Your teammates will not understand how to play around Teleport, and you are not mechanically good enough to survive without Flash. Once you hit high Emerald or Diamond, you start experimenting with Flash + Teleport into bad matchups. Ignite + Teleport is for one-tricks only. The most consistent setup across all elos is Flash + Ignite – it has the highest winrate and the most kill pressure.
You take Blade of the Ruined King into Kraken Slayer into Death's Dance when you want maximum damage output and dueling power. BORK gives you attack damage, attack speed, lifesteal, and percent current health damage – this is Irelia's best first item and has been for years. Kraken Slayer gives you attack speed and true damage every third auto – this shreds through tanks and squishies alike. Death's Dance gives you armor, attack damage, and the "Ignore Pain" passive – stores 30% of post-mitigation damage as a bleed over 3 seconds, and killing an enemy cleanses the bleed and heals you.
You build Plated Steelcaps against AD comps or Mercury's Treads against AP/CC comps. Your fourth item is Wit's End for attack speed and magic resist, and your fifth item is Guardian Angel for the revive. This build has the highest damage output and is the most popular build for Irelia.
You run this build into almost every matchup. It is never the wrong choice. The dueling power is unmatched, and you can 1v1 almost any champion in the game.
2) BLADE OF THE RUINED KING + HULLBREAKER + WIT'S END – THE SPLIT PUSH BUILD
You take BORK into Hullbreaker into Wit's End when you want maximum sidelane pressure. BORK gives you damage and sustain. Hullbreaker gives you armor, magic resist, and bonus damage to towers when no allies are nearby – this is your split-push engine. Wit's End gives you attack speed, magic resist, and on-hit magic damage – this is your answer to AP threats.
You build Plated Steelcaps or Mercury's Treads depending on the enemy damage type. Your fourth item is Death's Dance and your fifth is Guardian Angel. This build sacrifices teamfight damage for tower-taking power and is the best build for split-pushing.
You run this build when you want to play the sidelane game and force the enemy to respond to you.
3) BLADE OF THE RUINED KING + WIT'S END + DEATH'S DANCE – THE AP RESISTANCE BUILD
You take BORK into Wit's End into Death's Dance when the enemy team has heavy AP damage. Wit's End gives you attack speed, magic resist, and on-hit magic damage – this is your best anti-AP item. Death's Dance gives you armor and the damage bleed passive.
You build Mercury's Treads for the tenacity and magic resist. Your fourth item is Hullbreaker or Guardian Angel depending on whether you need split push or survivability.
You run this build into AP-heavy enemy comps where you need magic resist to survive.
4) BLADE OF THE RUINED KING + SUNDERED SKY + STERAK'S GAGE – THE BRUISER/TANKIER BUILD
You take BORK into Sundered Sky into Sterak's Gage when you need to be the frontline for your team. Sundered Sky gives you health, damage, and a heal on your first attack against each champion. Sterak's Gage gives you a shield when you take burst damage and tenacity.
You build Plated Steelcaps or Mercury's Treads. Your fourth item is Death's Dance and your fifth is Guardian Angel. This build sacrifices damage for survivability and is best when your team has no frontline and you need to soak damage.
VETERAN NOTE ON IRELIA BUILDS
BORK is your first item in 95% of games. It is never wrong. The choice is your second item. Kraken Slayer is the default for damage. Hullbreaker is for split-pushing. Wit's End is for AP-heavy comps. If you are unsure, build BORK → Kraken Slayer → Death's Dance. It has the highest winrate and is the most forgiving.
Make sure to grab Control Wards on every recall after your first or second base. Place them in the enemy jungle entrances, the river brush near the lane you're pushing, or the tribush near Baron – these spots give you vision to spot the enemy team rotating to collapse on you. Unlike ADCs, Irelia almost never buys Farsight Alteration. You need Oracle Lens to deny vision, not Farsight to gain it from a distance. Your goal is to be unseen while you split-push. A Control Ward in the enemy jungle + Oracle Lens to clear the rest = a free tower or a 1v2 outplay.
Wasting Q on Champions Without Mark: You Q onto a champion without marking them with E or R. Your Q goes on a long cooldown and you lose your mobility. Only Q onto champions who are marked.
Forgetting to Use W: You take burst damage and die with W available. Use W to absorb burst.
Overstaying in Lane: You get a kill, you have low health, you stay to push the wave. The enemy jungler kills you. Reset after every major fight.
Grouping Too Early: You group with your team mid and stop split-pushing. You lose your sidelane pressure and your team loses the 4v4. Keep splitting.
Not Tracking Enemy Jungle: You push without vision and get ganked. Always place wards before pushing past river.
Fighting Inside Enemy Minion Wave: You fight the enemy inside their minion wave and tank minion damage. Fight inside your own minion wave or in the river.
Dying with Flash Up: You die with Flash available. Use it to dodge CC, escape ganks, or reposition.
Is Poppy open? → Ban her.
Is Malphite open and Poppy banned? → Ban Malphite.
Does enemy team have 2+ tanks? → Build BORK → Kraken Slayer → Wit's End.
Does enemy team have squishies? → Build BORK → Kraken Slayer → Death's Dance.
Laning Phase (0-10 minutes):
Do I have 4 passive stacks? → Yes: Look for trade. No: Stack on minions first.
Is the enemy's key ability down? → All-in with 4 stacks.
Is the enemy jungler missing? → Play safe, stay near your tower.
Is my ultimate up? → All-in. Is it down? → Farm and stack.
Mid Game (10-25 minutes):
Is there a sidelane wave pushing? → Go catch it. Split-push.
Is my team fighting? → Do not group. Keep pressuring sidelane.
Is the enemy sending one person to stop me? → Kill them.
Is the enemy sending two people to stop me? → Your team wins 4v3.
Teamfights (25+ minutes):
Can I flank? → Yes: R onto backline. No: Wait for enemy CC.
Is my ultimate on cooldown? → Do not teamfight. Go split-push.
Did I just get a kill? → Q to the next target with resets.

This guide gives you everything you need. The runes, the items, the combos, the matchups, the synergies, the macro. What you do with it is up to you. Spend time in practice tool. Watch your replays. Track your deaths and ask why you died. Did you fight without passive stacks? Did you miss your E? Did you forget to track enemy CC? Fix one mistake at a time.
I have played Irelia since her rework. I have seen her through the Trinity Force era, the Titanic Hydra era, the BORK era. Through all of it, one thing remains true: Irelia rewards mastery. The more you play her, the better you get. There is always a faster Q reset, a cleaner E placement, a smarter split push.
