Diamond Support Orianna - Command: Support [26.14]

By Aqua Dragon
The Author

Hi! I'm Aqua Dragon. I've hovered around Diamond and Master while playing off-meta builds for multiple seasons. In the early seasons, I was an AD Jungle Malzahar main.

I also play:

What is Support Orianna? Why No AP Items?
Clockwork Protection

Orianna is best known for her powerful chunking ability in mid, but underlying that damage are some of the best utility buffs in the game. Unlike other supports that often rely on hard CC, Orianna's primary strength is manipulating the movement speed of the battlefield and providing allies with strong, long-distance shields. Orianna Support's purpose is to be an Enchanter support, similar to Janna.

Sphere Heading Defense

Command: Protect is one of Orianna's strongest supportive tools. The ball grants a large amount of armor and magic resistance to whoever it is attached to. In more intuitive terms, the ball gives an ally a huge pile of free defensive stats while Orianna stands safely outside the fight.

Command: Dissonance offers another powerful narrative. It provides a strong movement-speed boost to allies and an equally brutal slow to enemies in the area. Any melee champion trying to reach the balled target becomes cripplingly slow. With enough haste, the cooldown becomes short enough to use constantly. Huge uptime!

Command: Attack and Command: Shockwave also have utility, but theirs is far more apparent. Attack provides undeniable vision, while Shockwave provides a clumping tool and a ranged area stun against chases and during engages. Both simply add to Orianna's already-powerful toolkit.

Clockwork Windup... is just sort of there.

Why So Little Damage?

After the laning phase, if you are casting your spells whenever possible to maximize their utility, you will quickly find that there are not even a few seconds of free time to use them offensively. Any damage dealt to opponents is incidental; Orianna cannot effectively be an aggressive support while also being a utility support.

In addition, Orianna has fairly lackluster or merely decent AP ratios. When building massive AP, those ratios are sufficient to chunk. When relegated to support status, where building massive AP is not always feasible, it is too cost-prohibitive to get anything more than incidental damage.

Perhaps most importantly, I've tried many, many times to make a more damage-oriented version of Orianna work, and it has failed every single time. These experiments, across multiple seasons, focused on different versions of cost-effective damage, damage-oriented support items, and very aggressive laning. Consistently, the more support-oriented build had considerably more success. The damage builds inevitably fell off a cliff too quickly to be viable.
✔ Pros
  • Best defensive shield in the game
  • Powerful anti-melee peel
  • Strong poke at early levels
  • Strong, undeniable vision with the ball
  • Moves extremely fast; difficult to catch while warding
  • Easily racks up assists; plentiful gold for items
✘ Cons
  • Negligible teamfight damage
  • Weak waveclear
  • Weak lane presence after the early levels
  • Excessively mana hungry during the mid game
  • Only hard CC is tough to aim and not guaranteed
Runes
This Rune Ori That Rune?
Resolve Primary

Guardian

Guardian is why you're going Resolve. Orianna does not need Aery's offensive capabilities.

Font of Life

Font of Life adds a solid little bonus, while Shield Bash is too situational and falls off terribly hard.

Second Wind

Conditioning is reasonable, but Second Wind better covers Orianna's difficult poke lanes.

Revitalize

Revitalize makes the shield better. Yeah.

Precision Secondary

Legend: Haste

Mana is already covered, so Legend: Haste provides more shields and speed-ups.

Triumph

Presence of Mind is fine, but Triumph is the least bad companion and Orianna racks up assists super fast.

Shards

Ability Haste, Movement Speed, and Scaling Health

Haste improves the shields, while movement speed and scaling health suit Orianna's low-aggression early lane. The defensive shards remain flexible.

Situational

Grab all the Enchanter items and slam 'em into one pile. Those are all of Orianna Support's options.

You should finish a complete item before completing boots, though an early Boots is still fine if you feel it is needed.
Stage of the Game
Ballerina's Stage
Early Game

In the early game, your goals are to:

Harass Often With Just Q: Support Orianna can dish out very respectable damage during the early ranks, and she will not run out of mana unless you are also trying to shield the ADC constantly or using Command: Dissonance too much.

After the Early Levels, Forget About Poke and Damage: Orianna Support's damage is guaranteed to fall off rapidly, causing the lane poke to become critically weak. This is when Orianna turns into a full-time shield bot for the carry.

When Harassing, Do Not Always Recall the Ball: It is very handy to keep the ball near the enemies between Attacks so that you can more reliably land the next one.

Stack Autos During Early Skirmishes: Orianna's Clockwork Windup passive can deal meaningful damage during early trades once the enemy has committed.

Use the Ball to Help Ward and Clear: Command: Attack lets you check bushes before approaching them, which greatly increases how deeply you can ward and how aggressively you can contest enemy vision.

Mid Game

As the laning phase ends, your role expands past being just a shield bot:
  • Group with the team
  • Conservatively use Command: Dissonance to speed allies toward locations
  • During teamfights, keep the shield rotating to the highest-priority target
  • Peel melee champions with Dissonance
  • Disrupt channels with Command: Shockwave

Completely Ignore Damage-Dealing: At this point, Orianna's damage will merely tickle the enemy. Maximizing utility and shields is the way to go for the rest of the game instead of risking your position for suboptimal poke.

Command: Attack for Vision: Attack is useful for checking around dangerous corners before placing a ward and for safely contesting vision around bushes.

Stay on the Outskirts: The ball is the source of Orianna's utility. As long as you remain within command range of the fight, you are able to make an impact. Do not get close unnecessarily.

Use Dissonance on Minions and Pushes: Dissonance can speed allied minions, helping the entire push reach towers sooner. Use this to your advantage when moving with the team.

Use Dissonance to Trigger the Sleigh: Solstice Sleigh is a massive defensive boost. If you keep the ball on a carry who is about to be dived, all you need to do to trigger the Sleigh is activate Dissonance, providing a massive boost to their survivability.

Late Game

Your roles from the mid game remain, but as your items and haste increase, so too does your impact:
  • In fights, you should basically never stop casting your spells
  • Use Command: Dissonance constantly to speed allies toward locations
  • Use Dissonance while sweeping to cover a huge area with Oracle's Lens
  • Use Dissonance on minion waves to reach towers faster with them

Manipulate Movement Speed: Orianna Support's strongest power is marionetting the movement speed of the battlefield. Always think about how you are affecting both the speed of your enemies and the speed of your allies.

Keep the Ball on Allies: You should keep the ball on allies primarily for its passive defensive stats rather than only thinking about the shield. The shield is still strong, but the free defenses become especially meaningful later.

Ward Aggressively: Orianna's ability to scout with the ball makes her one of the safest warders in the game. Use this to light up the map like a Christmas tree when an objective is about to occur.
Thanks!
Thanks for reading! This build has been a lot of fun to play, and don't be afraid to reach out with any questions!
