This guide is about how I play Jax, succesfully.

NOTE: English isnt my native language. I'm sorry if there are gramma or writing mistakes.

+ great counter to AD carrys.
+ can jump to enemy/allied champions and minions.
+ AoE stun
+ cant be stopped if cleanse + ghost is up
+ nice amount of HP (passive)

- just good against heavy AD team

Start with Doran's shield

Core:
Ninja Tabis - The dodge helps your ulti and your [E]

Hextech Gunblade - AP, AD, Lifesteal and Spellvamp. Nerfed, but still a nice item. AD and AP are helping your passive.

Guinsoos Rageblade - AD, AP and little jax passive ulti. again the AP/AD thing.

Atmas Impaler - transforms your health gained from your passive into AD.

last 2 items can be:

trinity force - a little bit of everything. not 100% worth the gold, but ~89%.

rabadons - gives you a huge amount of AP.

thornmail - huge amount of armor. he enemy AD carry will fear to hit you.

bloodthirster - nice amount of Lifesteal if you are able to farm.

phantom dancer - nice mix of AS, MS and crit chance.

I prefer Cleanse and Ghost, because they can get you out of sticky situations and help you to chase someone.

alternatives:

flash - not this good anymore.

exhaust - nice choice, too.

ignite - same as exhaust.

surge - i personally dont like it, but it seems like other like it and use it succesfully.

promote - not this good but still not bad.

all other aren't for you ;D
