RoA and Ryalis are both quite expensive I find. I norm ally go frozen heart or abyssal sceptre depending on what I'm up against followed by spirit visage and maybe zhonyas hour glass. I find you can offset Maokai lousy AP ratio with magic pen and really low cd (you can have an ult with a 20 second cd if done right) which makes u spam your cc multiple times in a fight. Zhonyas is REALLY under utilised late game and its active is great for staying alive after initiating not to mention with low cds you can recast and don't forget 100 AP and 50 armour. anyway that's how i play him and seems work for me. I usually get about 300 armour 150 mres and 200 APo with 30% cdr

Yeah, I found out after further testing that Banshee's Veil is extremely good as well. Try that out as a general item for champions like Kat, Blitzcrank, Karthus, and anyone else that is potentially annoying with 1 ability. It's extremely nice to have because more mana is for more pikmen and more hp for being able to absorb more damage for your ult.

I definitely recommend putting Banshee's Veil in the main though. It's such a ridiculously good item on Maokia.
