The Korean Build: Best Winrate Riven!

By Corv9tte
Introduction to Riven
Hi! I'm making this guide to help out Riven players of all levels of play, as I have gathered a lot of knowledge on this, and also plug my stream (https://www.twitch.tv/corv9tte). I'm a Riven main climbing on EUW and trying to showcase some great gameplay, so check out the stream! :)

If you're new to Riven, realise she's not an easy champ to play at all. Toplane is really punitive for mistakes and you need to have a lot of experience in terms of mechanics for Riven to do damage properly, game knowledge in order to not fall behind and snowball, and practice for the different matchups. She's also not very fun to play, at all, when playing from behind. Which is why she's not a popular pick as the likes of Yasuo, for exemple, who will be game-changingly strong when he gets two or three items even if he is not particularly doing well (also called the 0/10 power spike).

That being said, she is a high skillcap hypercarry, incredibly rewarding champion to play. Her ultimate and CC makes her a high damage duelist, her AoE abilities can offer a lot of burst in teamfight (unlike other duelists like fiora), while her shield allows her to play around skirmishes and come out on top. Her unique kit and low cds playstyle makes any other champion in the game feel linear.

Well then, if all of that sounds good, then Riven is for you!

I just typed "best riven korea" out of curiosity on Youtube and this FYRIJ guy came up. I watched his replays and his playstyle fits Riven perfectly : he always comes out on top with a sliver of health and turns around situations that would've looked impossible, and, that is, against the best players in the world! Anyway I figured out his go to build and decided to make a personalized guide on it. Here is his opgg for reference : http://www.op.gg/summoner/userName=FYRIJ
Why is it good? Back to Top
So, as of 9.3, Riven just got an indirect nerf to her core item Essence Reaver, which is now Spear of Shojin. Do NOT build this item on Riven! At least not as your first two or three items. I believe the best build now is the foolproof Black Cleaver rush into Yoummou's Ghostblade and Death's Dance.

The only other viable choice would be to take the scaling cdr rune instead of the adaptive force, and get Yoummu's Ghostblade as a first item. The problem, if you do that, is exactly the same : you're going to want to build a Black Cleaver as your second item. You will sit on a Ghostblade with a Kindlegem and a Phage for a while, which will prevent you from snowballing by building more damage. Other top korean Riven mains do this and make it work, but personally, I'd rather get Black Cleaver done first and have clean power spikes after with Yoummou's Ghostblade (which has a great build path) and Death's Dance.

9.3 came in with a lot of direct nerfs to popular top laners like Akali, Sion, Irelia, Aatrox and as the meta is changing away from these, Riven is naturally going stronger (if you weren't rushing Essence Reaver before, because it's actually a huge nerf to Riven's build path and snowballing potential).

The Black Cleaver build is a scaling build, because you will need to have completed items to hit your power spikes and will not be taking B.F sword + Caulfield into a completed item anymore. That said, once you're past that, this is hands down the best build on Riven. Since there isn't anymore a viable build patch oriented for the early game phase, when you don't have a complete item yet, there is no reason to make another choice.
Understanding Power Spikes Back to Top
So, a power spike is a point in the game when you just bought an item, or evolved an ability (like your ultimate), that means your particular champion is going to be a lot stronger in an immediate way.

Power spikes explain why farming and wave management are such important skills.

Farming. In a very simple way, your CSing dictates how soon you are going to have items, because the later you get items, the less your power spike is going to impact the game.

Wave managment is a tactical approach to power spikes. For exemple, exposing yourself by pushing just before finishing an item is a tactical mistake, as you're better off letting the game play out a little longer and safely get to your item, than to risk dying for quick gold. This is also the worst time to expose yourself, as other players on the enemy team will be most likely to hit their own power spike, which will prevent your from fighting on even grounds. The reverse is absolutely true, and forcing fights right after getting to your power spike is a key element of snowballing a game by yourself and actually closing it (as enemy players are the most likely not to have their power spike yet).

Different regions and elos have very different pacing and playstyles. In my opinion, you can adapt to that and exploit it to chose your build path accordingly. [Currently in construction]
