AD is better for serious games because of his skill set strongly supporting using
for escaping.
And if you use arcane as an escape mechanic, that's only 2 moves that scale with AP, and one is on a 100 second cooldown.
When you combine that with Mystic shot's low base damage, low cooldown, high AD scaling, and Essence Flux's high base damage, no scaling on the AtS steroid/debuff, and it's much longer cool down than Mystic Shot, it becomes fairly plain why AD is superior in serious play.
AP is fun, but it's a much different play style in order to make it effective, and it uses Arcane Shift much differently.

Play AD if you want to be on the safe side, it outshines AP in many aspects.
However, if you feel very confident with Ezreal, you can also play him AP in ranked(Although I don't recommend it), Bigfatjiji does that sometimes, but he is also one hell of a good player.
