C9 won so many of their games this season because they used Korean meta strategies in the NA scene. Fast push towers became meta in NA because it was proven to be a very strong strategy. They even had to buff towers early. When you are looking to 'break the meta' with your friends don't worry about crazy champions or lane configurations. Try strategies that will improve your chances of winning the game. For example, play a game with your friends and try to see how early you can sneak a dragon or a baron.
