Japanese requires you to learn 3 alphabets, one of which is chinese kanji. With almost no similarity in function. I would say that these two are up there with mandarin Chinese. German is actually fairly easy, but also incredibly similar to English. [/quote] Oh god no it really isn't My mother tongue's English, and I'm a bit of a Grammar Nazi, but English has the most random rules and grammar ever. I'm studying English Language at college, and wow does it surprise you. As a quick example - take the sentence "I house my walked to". There's no reason that sentence shouldn't be right, it can only mean one thing, yet the grammar is, quite blatantly, incorrect, for seemingly no reason. Then there's run/ran, gun/gunned, fan/fanned. Why is run, and some other words, different to others? I could give you many more examples, but read something by David Crystal, it surprises you how stupid the language is.[/quote]
