To be honest, a little bit of real life trickles into my LoL play.
I'm almost always the solotop or jungle. The isolated one, only showing up when something is going wrong or when I feel like it. That said, I play terribly in duo-lanes.
If I have to play a duo-lane, it has to be someone tankier. because I'm used to playing solo-tanky types, I'll generally overestimate the damage I can take from one person and end up dying if I'm someone like Caitlyn or Tristana. If I'm like, Taric or something, the defensive numbers seem to click for me.
Also,
Maokai is a solo top champ. :3

I play champions that no one plays and champions that annoy the **** out of people if played correctly. I personally go for stealth characters like
Twitch. He fits the previously mentioned categories as well as being a super kawaii, super sugoii stealth champ. + he's a rat.

I prefer solotops because I won't have to rely on someone else. Not that I'm good. But if I fail it's most likely my own fault :b And then I can't blame everyone else. Then once in a while I play jungler. Just to make sure everyone blames me and I go back to my top :D

Personally I prefer to play tank, regardless of where they fit in a lane. That being said many of my tanks are junglers;
Just a random thought I had.
-side note- Why is it so hard to get my team to leash blue for me? (I'm summoner level 21)
