It really depends on how u build him, but the only threat you can generate with him is his Q and W, once those are on CD I feel like Malph after he ults.

you can still do the Headbutt pulv combo not many people know this yet but it still works stop *****ing about it you just instantly pulv like when your getting close with the headbutt charge i did it multple times today.. i use to go AD ya sounds lame but old ali as AD=TOWER CRUSHER.. now i go AP why because new ali with new passive=Tower crusher and 2 shots carries too had to throw that in there.. sometimes i go tank if we need a tank but otherwise i go dmg and use my ulti for tankish things its usually last long enough for the fight to end or close to ending either way i feel like im much mroe of a threat as AP because now i do an AoE heal for 300+ and have 2 abilities that crush carries and an ulti that still makes me tanky i still have decent amount of HP and **** with RoA possibleing rylais so its all around better imo... and does very nice dmg to towers once you grab lichbane instant tower kills pretty much..
The problem for Alistar is that he only has like 2 AP items that actually work good with him. 
Abyssal Mask and Lich Bane. Those do not provide enough AP to make a Lich Bane proc deal more damage than a Trinity Force proc. (TF gives +180dmg while LB only gives +150)
He can't farm enough to get a ROA.

Just tried the Headbutt->pulv combo.
It works like a charm. I have no idea of how you can fail it..

You clearly aren't playing Alistar as he's intended to be played.. He's a very strong champion WITHOUT farm. That's the reason people roam with him.
IF the game actually lasts long enough to allow it I'm not against the AP idea completely, but Deathcap is expensive >.< and ROA is not good to get late in the game. (he needs 2 GP10 items before all other items)

roaming really isnt a must it has been proven multiple times to have hurt teams if the early ganks dont work out if you dont get ganks while roaming you are completely useless yes roaming is starting to become a big part of this game but it has shown in many tourneys to have ****ed the team over more then helped i build this way as AP if i dont feel like roaming yes he is one of the best roamers if not the best but some people just don't know how to play with roaming and push their lanes this is when i decide im just gonna lane because if not im completely useless and agreed he is a strong champ without farm but you can even jungle him now which is actually really strong too now with him he can be played many ways there is no one way to play him every one has their own opinion.
Alistar doesn't benefit all that much from farming up. He's often better off leaving that for the champions who need it. As such he fits the role of a supporter or roamer.
