Looking to buy a mage

Hey,

I recently started to play this game (again, after some levels last year), my account is currently on level 17.

As mages are my favourite type of characters in other Dota-like games, I'm looking for a great mage to buy and start learning.

What do I want from the mage:

High area damage, I think it's better to start learning this game by keeping a distance away from the teamfights while being useful. I don't know what most characters do and observing is better than being taken down n 1 second (because Yasuo just did it on my very fed Fortune).

Some CC. While being useful as self defense, I also want to be able to set up kills. A stun& slow would be great, but I don't mind Root& slow or root & silence (root = not sure if this is how it's called in league).

Mobility is not a must, but it would definitely be a pro. Above "requirements" are much more important.

Already tried: Ahri, Evelynn, Fiddlesticks (I love his CC by the way), Lissandra, Vladimir and LeBlanc. At least these are the ones I remember.

Though she's more often played as a support now, I would generally recommend Annie to newer players who want to learn mid lane, as her Disintegrate makes it very easy for her to farm minions without running out of mana (if done properly) and she has strong AoE burst and a stun. However, she's not exactly a mobile champion and she doesn't exactly teamfight by "keeping a distance" (generally it's better to run or even Flash into range to hit as many opponents as possible with a Summon: Tibbers stun), so she might not entirely fit your requirements.

If you want slightly harder champions to play which excel at staying in the back and using their long range damage to still be useful, I'd recommend Ziggs or Lux. Again, these champions aren't the most mobile ones out there though :P

Good luck!

Soooo... you want:
High area damage
Harrassing in distance
Slight to moderate CC

I think the following will be your potential champion :3
Vel'Koz
Xerath
Ziggs

They all enable you to harrass in a distance during laning phase. AOE ult (R) on Vel'Koz and Ziggs, Xerath ult is more for finishing and snipe opponent from distance though.

Twisted Fate answered all your questions.

His passive Loaded Dice will made you rich.

His Q Wild Cards has a very long and large area damage with superb damage.

His W Pick A Card Has 2 kind of hard CC Red Card for slow and Gold Card for stun.
And his Blue Card will give you enough mana-sustain to poke your enemy all day long.

His E Stacked Deck give a DOTA feeling, that champion (Hero in Dota) should have some steroid passive.
This will buff your attack speed for 40% at max level, and every 4 hit will deal bonus magic damage.

Mobility is not a must, but he has ultimate Destiny as a free "MAP HACK" and TELEPORT.

If you're okay with skillshots, then:

Ziggs - Good damage, good waveclear, all AoE abilities, soft CC.

Xerath - Good damage, monstrous range but somewhat high skill cap.

Orianna - Safe pick, great utility, decent CC.

These are all reliable picks to have and will generally fit any team.

Others I generally recommend to beginners:

Ryze - Though not really long ranged, has target abilities, so you can't miss with his abilities. For similar reasons, Annie is also a good pick as Wayne said.

Karthus - Safe laning phase and game changing ultimate.

And then a personal favourite of mine:

Veigar - Moderately high skill cap, but extremely high damage and a stun.

The first champion that your requests will bring me to the mind is Xerath:

- High area damage - checked!
- Keeping a distance - checked!
- Some CC. A stun& slow would be great - both checked!!

Suffer for not having mobility, but you said not to be so important.

Syndra perhaps? It's not as high-range as some of the other examples but she's pretty mobile(cast abilities while moving) and packs some cc.
********'s a pretty good fertilizer

Thanks again guys, I have decided to buy Syndra for now, followed by Twisted, Vel'Koz and Ziggs. Xerath is great as well, but he'll have to wait for a bit.
Couldn't try Karthus, Orianna and Vel'Koz, but I sure like the big eyed champ a lot!

Meanwhile I have also tried (and bought) Akali (holy mother of God - my 1st penta), Morgana (also fits my style) and I can play her as a pure mage in Dominion with no one yelling at me.

I've decided to get Syndra since my friend told me she fits best my style (as we also play DotA and Smite together), she's supposed to be a high-burst mage. The price is kind of high, but I hope it's worth the effort.
