You can never go wrong with 
Xerath unless playing a long range poke heavy champion who's got thinner skin then a jellyfish is not your thing.
But yeah Xerath is super fun but he dies super fast/easy if you cant land that stun, or walk just one step to close to the enemy. He's not the best for beginners but if you take the time to learn him he is really fun, and one of my favorite mages in the game.
