League of Legends player-run jury system, The Tribunal, recently celebrated its one year anniversary. The Tribunal has been quite successful and popular among League of Legends players. Requests for reports of players who misbehave in games are usually respected and enemy players will even be sympathetic. This change of heart is evident in the statistics reported by Pendragon on its one year anniversary:

Pendragon wrote:
  • More than 47 million votes have been cast in the Tribunal
  • 51% of Tribunal cases result in a guilty verdict, with only 5.7% earning a permanent ban
  • 50% of players warned by the Tribunal just once never end up there again
  • Over 700 individual cases were personally reviewed by Lyte and me

I was very happy to see that 50% of players warned by The Tribunal don’t get reported again. This really speaks to the effectiveness of this system. On December 21, 2011 Pendragon reported a statistic that 94% percent of players that receive enough reports to face The Tribunal are punished. This is markedly different from the current statistic of 51% of Tribunal cases resulting in a guilty verdict. The system has either become fairer, or players are realizing they can’t get away with misbehaving in games. My hope is that both have happened.

In order to keep the Tribunal as fair as possible, Riot has rolled out some updates to celebrate the one year anniversary. These changes involve giving the jury more information, but also just making The Tribunal easy to use. Here’s a list of the changes made:

Pendragon wrote:
  • We’ve updated the color palate to ensure that chat and report explanations are red-green colorblind friendly.
  • The game mode and queue type (Ranked or Normal) are now displayed
  • The defendant’s summoner spells and total gold are now visible
  • Information on the defendant’s teammates, including their champions, levels, items, summoner spells, gold, minion kills and kill-death-assist ratio is now included
  • Chat filtering options have been added to the chat log

Pendragon has also hinted at the possibility of adding before/after game chat to the record, and whether or not players in the game (offender or not) were part of a premade group. I really like the idea of adding these, since a lot of “refusing to communicate with team” happens at champion select, and premade groups have a lot easier time reporting / bullying the odd man out. However, Pendragon stated it was on the “to-do list” so it’s hard to say if it will come out and when. Keep your fingers crossed! :)

If you’ve ever read the Tribunal, I’m sure you’ve had some cases where you literally laugh out loud. I wanted to share the most amusing case with you I’ve seen that has become something of a LoL meme, XIN VS. SONA!

Remember, THE TRIBUNAL NEEDS YOU! (informational graphic from Dec 2011)

Are you the one drawing the banners for your news posts?
They're so nice. :D

Also, RIOT has done so much with the tribunal and it has been improved so much since it's first iteration.
