They don't get that much. They get a 15% cut from sold items, which I think is fair. You're making money by using their system, it's obvious they'll get a cut. It happens in google play as well, for example, when you put an app up for sale. Or while selling a flash game the FGL will get 10% of your sale, and all they do here is host a bidding auction to see which sponsor pays more. Steam does this as well, like any other store, and even paypal gets 4% of every transaction.
Whenever you make money using someone else's platform you will have to pay. Nothing is free. I find it completely ridiculous when people whine about it.

What's wrong with having to stay online to play?
because the game was made to be online only to keep people from duping or hacking items and gold to protect the auction house, yet there was as much duping and hacking as there was in diablo 2.
