Apart from your children, it doesn't sound like there's anything that can't be fixed though. You can run MalwareBytes' free scanner if you want, it has a reputation. Unless you're an insane power user an SSD or HDD shouldn't be dead by now but you could investigate.

Uh, system restore? Reformat? You did keep the CD's, yes? Don't throw away 1.2k of hardware and not at least try out the basic troubleshoots. But seeing how the only kinds of people that pick up nasty viruses these days are..... oh nevermind!
