I mean, he does have some pretty good AP ratios.
The two issues are that AP items are expensive, and cannot always be bought - Jungling is a very gold restricted role, so it'd probably be difficult to buy a Needlessly Large Rod in one recall, unless you're incredibly far ahead... in which case it wouldn't really matter anyways.
The other issue I have wiith AP amumu is that you don't provide much utility to your team outside of your ulti. Having only health from 1 item and armor/mr from 1 item means that ADCs will shred you very quickly. The issue becomes that you need to land a godlike ult for your team to win the fight - otherwise, they'll be in a 4v5 basically.
If you miss your ulti on important targets, then you may have just single handedly lost your team a team fight.

Most of the items in that build are usually bought on Amumu anyway, except for the one you deem as optional.
Replace Runeglaive with cinderhulk, Sorc shoes with merc treads and get a Frozen Heart and you've got tank Amumu.

Basically MOBAFire.

I rely on ganks and early team fights for the gold :-P. But i see where you are coming from. But in my case i usually focus on the ADC in fights to lock him down. He is my priority so i dont have issues with that as much as when i go with the tank build. With the tank builds i fall off. Low dmg output and become useless in my eyes. Again though it could be do the the non rank level matches..

I was running a build like this, cinderhulk, merc, frozen heart was my core and depending on situation id go for rylas and then more tank, however i felt like i was proving zero to actually killing heros and becoming more of a number for the ADC to crit down. LEts face it when Jinx is criting everyshot for 500-600, 3k life is not much... I feel with this AP cannon build and focusing the ADC as the target and with a well placed bandaid, ulti and E makes the ADC a quick meal! Zhonyas for incase i dont have time for the ulti right away
Im going to continue tinkering with the build. I feel like his dmg as an AP is there more so then tank. HE is no NAR,mundo, or alistar, but i see him as a less broken Viegar (1000ap) as for burst dmg. Like i said maybe i dont fully understand items and item optimization yet, but i feel like he has a lot to bring to matches in every match up, more so jungling, however i have been running him as a support, and a couple times top. We will see. Thank you for your guys input!!
Enchantment: Runeglaive only deals AoE magic damage on basic attack to monsters. It's mostly used for mage champions who are mana hungry and don't have AoE clear. While Amumu is mana hungry, he has more than enough AoE clear via Despair and Tantrum. So Runeglaive doesn't help Amumu in the jungle, and because the Spellblade AoE damage only happens when you attack monsters, it doesn't help him out that much in teamfights either (other than the item stats, of course).
I agree with Jimmydoggga, Get Cinderhulk, and then you can go some more AP damage. Rylai's Crystal Scepter and Liandry's Torment in particular work well together and give you tankiness via health. But you really need some armor too, and Frozen Heart or Randuin's Omen are great options which also counter attack speed or crits, respectively. I would also get either Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads, unless you are doing exceptionally well.

ATM i would say Iceborn Gauntlet > Frozen Heart in any situation. Because of that, Enchantment: Runeglaive is kinda unneccesary.
