You are confused with the math, it is not that complicated.
Each spell deals a diff. form of damage, regardless of if the extra damage is acquired from mana, AP, AD, armor, w/e -- either magic or physical/
For instance, all of Kat's abilities deal magic damage, so, regardless of if she builds AD or AP or hybrid, get Magic Resist to counter her.

I suggest taking a read on all champion abilities here:

One by one. There is almost everything there to determine what kind of damage you will get.
There are some exeptions like Kog'Maw, Teemo, Twitch and so on that will apear in your death log as a "DAMAGE" nor physical or magical. That is caused by their damage is dealt from both sources and you have to think which source is bigger.
For example AS/Bloodrazor Kogmaw will deald alot of "Damage" but pretty much most of the damage is magical (his skill does % based magic damage + his normal AD + Bloodrazor proc which is also magical).
And for example AD/AS teemo will deal alot of "DAMAGE" in his standard attacks but most of it will be physical (the Damage over time effect on AD/AS teemo is quite low)
Expirience and knowledge, nothing else but take your time and read about those champs...
Knowledge of your enemy = win.
That is why many kids are QQ after a new champ is introduced that he is OP, just becouse they dont have enaugh knowledge about the champ... damn even Cassiopea was usefull back then :P

You need to log in before commenting.
For example, if a katarina( i know i use her for all of my examples, but shes the one that sticks out the most) has 150ad and 200ap and ults you and u have say 55% ad mitigation and 50% ap mitigation. when the damage is taken would it take the highest of the two so you'd take the 50% mitigation for it being more ap or would you mitigate 55% of the ad aspect and 50% of the ap aspect and kinda balance out( i may be getting the numbers wrong and hopefully im not but hopefully u get the idea).
And yes i know the best thing to do is to gtfo or interrupt it, but for examples sake u cant or u take a hit or two >_>. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks ^_^
