Almost everybody buys a Rageblade and a Gunblade on Jax, first. Why this fascination with the Rageblade?
I know it's quite cheap for the amount of damage it COULD offer, but you need stacks to make it work.
And since there is something called crowd control and Jax' lack of a slow (only red buff), you're rarely able to contain the stacks on either your ultimate or even Rageblade's.

I've been playing Jax a lot lately and I found these core items to work way better.
Boots - almost always mercury, boots of lucidity when we're dominating.
Hextech Gunblade - huge amount of lifesteal and damage and an awesome 3 second (!!!) slowing nuke.
Sheen - a way more reliable damage-booster than Rageblade. Plus it's great for Jax specifically, since all of his skills have a very low cooldown and it solves a lot of mana-related issues.

I hate losing those stacks on my ultimate, so I buy Sheen to stop relying on my stacks. I'd reconsider if the stacks on Jax's ulti would last one or two seconds longer.

Why buy Mercury or Lucidity boots? He gets a ton of his strength from dodge.

A ton? I don't agree. The dodge chance you get from runes and counter strike is sufficient for most situations and the tiny bit of (unreliable) magic resistance is barely noteworthy.

Besides, Mercury provides stats Jax lacks and needs: reliable magic resistance and a great amount of cc reduction. I haven't really had any success with the new tenacity items, so I don't use them. The Spellblade gives you more AP, which I don't really care about (I prefer a more AD-orientated build) and the C&D give crit chance, which I'm not looking for, early to mid game.

Most of Jax's damage and stuns come from his skills, so the 15% CDR boots of lucidity provides is a great boost for Jax.

Need CC reduction? Simple. Get a Philo stone early and upgrade it later to Elysia's Miracle.

I don't want cc reduction later, I want it now :p
And I'd rather spend the inventory space on something else.

EDIT: I started this thread to get an idea of why people rush Rageblade, taken into account the things I said in my first message.

He shouldn't stop attacking really. Sure he loses HP if he stops when he has rageblade but, you should be assassin-y anyway.

This is what I mean. You can't always keep attacking - people have stuns, throws and fears, you can't always keep up the stacks, even if you want to. It's a nice bonus item, imo, but core? No.

I'm not saying that you should get it late, I'm saying that you should get it after maybe the first primary weapon or so. So that you get some gold out of the Philo.

I've always said that Rageblade isn't reliable.

Rush gunblade after boots, then work on your build.
Tri lane for life.

Thanks Searz, I'll try doing that! It could save me a couple blue pills.

@Temzilla: I wasn't aware of that, but I still wonder why I see no guide with a Sheen as a core item... It's so much burst for your buck.
