Is it only me? I don't like this item on my support, because it consumes one spot and I can only have 2 (upgraded 3) wards at the same time. Only early game I can handle with two wards, later I often have up to six wards at the same time out - so I have to use one spot for that stone and one for wards - leaving me with four other item-slots, which really is not that much. I think this works better on solo-top, mid and jungle players, but now on those, who really really ward a lot.
I personally buy a lot of pink wards to use for several crucial locations. I haven't really noticed too much of a difference since sight wards and vision wards take up separate slots anyways.

I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE! Honestly, I have the same feelings as you about the sightstone. I understand that it's cheaper over time etc, but I find myself running out of space without it, let alone with it. And saving the money for it means I don't have enough wards for lane, it's just awkward to buy. The argument that has swayed me a little is people saying 'think of it as the heart of gold you would have bought', but the difference with the heart of gold is that you could build the ruby crystal, buy some wards, build the HoG, buy more wards, but with the sightstone you have to save up the 700 gold which is just frustrating. I would much more likely get it if it had an intermediary item, but for now it's just annoying to build, even though I understand it's a gold saver long term.
