Going More In-depth Specifics on the earlier Article

"You know those games you are up on the enemy team and are much stronger in a fight but your team just can't seem to get on the enemy team. Well more often than not this is due to the fact your team lacks a good initiation. Initiation will serve as the primary way to start a fight and depending on how your team initiates could be the difference between an easy fight and a crushing defeat. Picking champions that will enable these kind of play like scenarios to happen would be ideal (such as Maokai or Hecarim). When in a soloQ game if possible ALWAYS try and have a strong engage to press a lead or catch enemies out of position."

What is Initiation

Initiation in league of legends is the act of jumping in on an enemy champion in order to start a fight. In short initiation is how you will start a fight. Initiation can be done by jumping on an enemy and having a fight start from that action. Initiation in Lol typically will come in the form of an AoE CC ult or a long range gaplcloser followed by a CC. A full initiation is typically obvious to spot due to the use of long cooldown skills and the all in from the champions who are following it up.

Importance of Initiation

Initiation is when and how your team will go into a fight. As such it is important to always have at least 1 champion capable of initiating for your team if possible. When people talk about their soloQ losses many a time you will hear something to the degree of "Well our dumbass taric felt like initiating" or "I only lost the game because our stupid Caitlyn got caught". Now I will not go into why blaming teammates is bad, but both of those are cases of initiation in soloQ winning a game. In first case the Taric initiated, but he clearly initiated poorly and doing so lost his team a fight and most likely the game. In the second case the caitlyn was most likely caught out of position and initiated on this could have either led to her team coming in to try and save her or dieing or her simply dieing but the loss of pressure allowing the enemy team to do something across the map. In both of these 2 examples initiation was a key factor in how the game was decided (It may not be the only reason, but from the statements we heard that is the assumption that can be made). Many a game of soloQ is decided based on who initiates better. I have often found that playing champions with a strong initiate is one of the best ways to carry soloQ.

When should I Initiate

One of the most common make or brake points with an initiation is how it's done. A good initiation should follow these 6 steps to be done properly.

1. If its a catch on an enemy

If possible you would like the initiation to catch out one enemy and kill them instantly with little resources burned

2. Engage on an enemy that you can do stuff too

Make sure the enemy initiated on is a target that needs to be killed. If you engage on their Amumu the enemy team will have a much easier time responding than if your engage caught someone else.

3. Watch your team make sure they are ready(Health,Mana, positioning, ultimates)

WATCH YOUR OWN TEAM before you engage on the enemy. Just because you catch an enemy to get the engage on that doesn't mean you should do it. If your team is not in the position to follow it up (low hp, mana, distance) then your initiation will be wasted. Also watch your teams ultimates (green light by their profiles on the right) and make sure the core ults are up before you fight.

4. Initiating under/near turrets

If possible do not fight under an enemy turret. Unless you absolutely overpower the enemy an engage under their turret can be disastrous. If the enemy team is tutting and you need an engage you should force other objectives and hope for a catch.

5. Pros/Cons of the initiate before you do it

Think of how the initiate could go before you do it. If the enemy team is stronger and just straight up can kill you it is not worth it. Weigh the risks for the rewards.

6. Look at enemy team

WATCH THE ENEMIES this is like watching your own team except harder. Try and keep track of their cooldowns and health and engage at the point when they are the weakest.

Champions that can Initiate

Factors to look for in champions with initiation capabilities will be a decently long ranged gap close and some sort of followup move to it (Preferably a strong CC or AoE CC)

Examples:
Amumu-Jungle
Malphite-Top/Jungle
Hecarim-Jungle
Ashe-ADC (Arrow Catches)
Taric-Support (Minor)
Blitzcrank- Support (Good for starting engages with a catch)
Thresh-Support
Twisted Fate-Mid (TP Zhonyas)
Rumble-Top
Karthus-Mid (Wall)
Jarvan IV-Top/Jungle

Conclusion

Initiation is an important part of soloQ and Lol in general. How you initiate can either make or break the game. When you are picking champs in champ select MAKE SURE you have some way of initiating on the enemy. If you take no initiation your team wont be the ones who get to start the fights. As always summoners I hope you have a good day and good luck on the fields of justice!
