They're doing this because new crits suck. They're way more expensive and they actually do less damage because the true damage is only as good as the old damage increase on targets above 166 armor....

Depends, who do you play? If you're ranged you can take almost no damage with proper kiting. If you're melee there isn't much skill involved but maybe there's a problem with your itemization.
