@ PsiGuard I dunno about that. I used to main him and I admit I like where the rework is going. Yes, Aatrox has lost his identity but personally, I prefer trying to aim skills and casting rather than just going in and pressing right click. Besides which, way I see it, he's either going to prove too strong and get nerfed into oblivion or prove too weak and be buffed into mediocrity. As sad as it makes me, I believe he will be forgotten a few months in the future.
Edit: Also, since they did try to do a mini-rework recently and it turned out underwhelming, perhaps a full on rework was warranted? Sure, I'll be sad to see the old one gone but I'm keeping an open mind to the new one. I mean, the change is coming whether Aatrox mains like it or not so no point for me to sulk about it, eh?

I'm bored.

I'm just wondering why they don't prioritize champs with cancer mechanics for reworks like

Everyone has different thoughts on which champions have flawed mechanics and what would need to be changed. Abaddon I think you nailed Riot's perspective on Aatrox and their goals for changing him, but it seems they didn't leave much for the current Aatrox players. I'm sure many players will enjoy the new Aatrox more than the old one, but either way he's still a very different champion. On the scale of the Sion rework imo.
Mostly I'm just not convinced that Aatrox was "toxic" enough design-wise to warrant such a drastic shift in identity. I'm sure they could have come up with an interesting kit that was still based largely on autoattacking.

Thanks to Fatelblade for the sig!
Yes, you are right when you say his original design isn't as bad as to warrant such an extreme makeover. You likened him to Sion's rework and the old Sion was much worse than what current Aatrox is, and again yes, they could have reworked him without changing his playstyle completely into that of an AD spellcaster. Even I myself, when I read that they would rework him "from the ground up" (I believe that was the exact phrase I saw the rioter use) did not expect a drastic change. Also, given Aatrox's troubled history, I find it hard to believe that he will actually be good now, but that's my pessimism talking.
All in all, I understand why Aatrox mains are upset, it's just that personally, I'm open to changes. Not all change is good, obviously, but I do hope that the new Aatrox will be better than the old one, and I do hope that Aatrox mains give him a chance and try him out before they fling verbal feces at riot for the rework. After all, this is a game and having fun is the most important thing.

You are right! I'm an Aatrox player and I found this rework is completely unpleasant. It is nothing like the old agile fighter, it is now more like a slow and heavy dmg caster. It does not move as fast as Riven, and its casting speed is too slow, say 0.4-0.6 s, most experienced players can doge these spells, making its dmg only suitable for crowd teamfight. Personally, I feel very disappointed about this rework and hope they can bring back my old Aatrox.
