I think his skill cap rose somewhat, and his early game might be a little more manageable, but I'm not an expert/experienced Kassadin player so I want an opinion from someone who is.

The right way to build him is almost purely damage. Lich Bane is amongst your first items for greater burst.

"There are modifications that can help (yellow HP bar etc) if this is a problem for you. Generally speaking though, if you position correctly in fights there are very few times that this can actually happen to you.
