It's not meant to be chosen over AD, it's meant to be an alternative for people enjoy playing him a lot.
He does very well at mid, and he's a viable pick as a true AP character.

"I don't know, it seems like it's just the animation clipping through I guess. I tried to see whats wrong in a custom game, and it seems like the hitboxes on Varus's Q and ultimate are not as wide as the animation suggests. They did say they "hotfixed" and issue with Q not hitting at ma"
