Views: 2953 Why Riot, Why? Episode 1
|
Good Evening.
This is going to be my introduction and first entry to a series dedicated to the things that Riot does wrong. Of course, these are all just personal opinions and don't necessarily reflect the views or beliefs of MOBAfail (which is pretty much everything I say). Today, I'd like to talk about a subject that we're ALL pretty much involved with;
So we've finally entered the 2014th year of Man Kind after the birth of our dear Lord and all we've got to show for it are things like the tribunal being put into play. Yes, the Tribunal, a systems dedicated to cleaning out the filth that is the Riot community. It's sort of a backwards system, if I say so myself, given that 70% of the people who are voting on these cases are troublemakers themselves according to LoL's statistics and data released last year (don't quote me on that, it just sounds flashy and professional).
Upon reviewing a lot of these cases, I noticed that there was a really stupid trend happening in most of these games; The reports were the ENEMY TEAM reporting a PLAYER that KICKED THEIR *** for STUPID ****.
Just take a look at some of these snap shots I took of cases being sent to the tribunal (which I think is probably the ****tiest system invented to fix a problem community)

Yasuo was the one reported.

Yasuo was the one reported

Zed was the one reported. Apparently, 20 seconds of "XD" is spamming the whole game.

Katarina was the one reported.

Twitch was the one reported.
These were from my first 3 cases. Holy ****. Riot, look at this ****. These reports are from the enemy team, half of which got their *** kicked by these people. I mean look at this ****. I know it looks like I'm cherry picking, but honest to god, these spots in the reports are the "worst" the problem player was being. Even then, it begs the question:
There is absolutely no reason why this game should have all chat, given that the game has been out for less than 5 years and it already has over 6 million cases. If you honest to god want to reduce the amount of cases your stupid *** game gets, REMOVE THE ****ING ALL CHAT FUNCTION FOR THIS GAME.
There is absolutely no reason for people to even communicate with the other team. And even then, how many times do you see people use all chat maturely? I'm the only one, along with that Electrike I duo queue with, that use it to compliment people from time to time. Excluding yourself, how many times do you see people spamming all chat with "REPORT THIS <champ> HE FEEDING" when all that happened was him getting ganked a lot? Or how about the classic "THIS TEAM! OH MY GAWD GG". Or how about "LOL YOU ****ING SUCK YOU USED ALL YOUR ULTS AND SPELLS ON ME LOOOOOOOLZ XD GG TOO STRONK GG NO RE OP NERF IRELIA XD XD XD"? The all chat feature in League of Legends is nothing more than a soapbox and tribunal case fodder, especially for the enemy team. There is no reason why the enemy team should be given something to use as a parting shot on the star player of the opposing team that kicked their ***. That
Katarina game was proof of this ******** happening (and that case only had 2 PROBLEM GAMES! And the SAME **** HAPPENED IN THE OTHER GAME TOO!).
This community doesn't need all chat. There is no reason to communicate with the other team at all. Maybe if Riot added the, oh, I don't know, TIME OUT function that DoTA has to help with player disconnects, then I could see it being needed. But other than to flame, say "GOOD ****ING GAME" and taunt, there shouldn't be any logical reason to use all chat or to have it as a package deal for the game. If you wanna compliment an enemy player on their good plays, do that at the end of the game. And that's, honestly, what the end game load out screen is for.
All chat is the stupidest thing in the world to have for this game and Riot should feel ****ing ashamed of themselves for having included such a ******ed thing in a game with such a ****ty *** community. This is exactly why the Horde can't communicate with Alliance players on WoW. Learn from Blizzard, you lot of idiots!

1. I have. Most of them are reports out of dumb reasons or exaggerated and can be ignored. The other section is just a common phenomenon of a large playerbase / population (Happens everywhere. Same reasons why utopias don't work). Compare that number to the number of players / games, and you'll see the difference.
2. Swearing has never been an issue in anything. Censors are for the younger people playing.
Your condemnation of all-chat is overstated...
I know you are but what am I?
Also, from what I understand, the warning system will now include a link to your cases you were reported for.
Now that would be wonderful. :)
Embracing - good point, I forgott about censorship for kids and to be safe from parents suing Riot for letting them swear openly.
Btw. does anyone know, how many cases do you have to vote on, to get that ranking?
1. Start seriously judging cases. You'll see how "rare" this thing is.
2. If swearing is not a problem, why if you write any of the rude words in chat, you see them as **** ? If being rude ******* is OK, why the censorship? Just to make this game PG12?

Tribunal begs to differ. How you can consider removing in-game all chat as a restriction on players is vastly over-stated, in my opinion. I can promise you that people won't miss it, aside from the internet freedom fighters that you'll find on tumblr who will be all like ROW ROW FIGHT DAH POWER!

Wouldn't that be aimed towards people that report everyone every game as opposed to people that report someone every once in a while out of spite?
Something like that :P
If you report too much on league of legends you can also get a warning and even a ban. Not exactly sure how that system works, but it exists :P

You have to figure they can't look through everything. Last I checked, they have over 6.7 million cases now. They need to make like DoTA and limit the amount of reports you can use per week. I think DoTA has it where you can report 3 times a week. If you report falsely, the amount of times you can report weekly gets reduced till you report better.
Also, from what I understand, the warning system will now include a link to your cases you were reported for.

The tribunal is ****. Peers-judge is never impartial and 1 game is capable of representing squat, I'll agree on that.
Actually, judging is made only if enough reports are collected. You always judge that person from 3 - 5 cases they were reported for. And there is always a total amount of reports written (varies from 3 to 25).
Sad thing is, many judges judge like this:
- They play few games of LoL
- They do poorly, and rage quit
- They go to Tribunal section and click PUNISH button in all of those 20 cases they are available to judge upon, just to feel better.
I personally pardoned 5 cases so far. Those are my only "incorrect" ones (since majority voted for punishing). So basically - if you punish all reported players, you can't go wrong. And Riot doesn't look upon those cases (too much to handle I guess), so system just bans, warns or whatever, reported players.
And another problem with tribunal is - if you get punished, you don't know what for!
I got 2 warnings already. While the first one was well deserved, since I was toxic like Chernobyl... I really don't know what did I get the second one for. After the first warning, I changed my behaviour greatly. I never swear, I don't rage, or cry in chat... maybe I was punished exactly because I got reported for raping noobs. Who knows. I never saw my case, so I can't tell.
If I was sent an e-mail with my case, upon which I was sentenced, I would find what did I do wrong, so I could avoid doing that in the future.
I know it's beside the point you're trying to make but I don't like all-chat being taken away. You will find another ground to criticize how and what riot fail, I'm sure you will, so no hard felling.
Secondly, it doesn't have a huge negative impact on the game (pretty sure there's at least 40% of players who enjoy communicating with others), so why remove it?

Like I've said, not everyone who uses all chat is a total tool, but let's face it, how rare of an occurrence is this? It's, more or less, a breeding ground for the toxicity that is the LoL community. And how many people do you think are mature enough to actually use the "Disable all chat" feature? The game's for kids and immature ****s with too much time on their hand. Blizzard foresaw this with WoW, hence why on PvP servers (for the longest time), players were only able to make characters for one faction and were not able to communicate with the enemy team no matter what.
Honestly, I'd run into the idiot from to time pre-Cataclysm who'd have two alt accounts just to scream at another person for raping them either at a battleground area in the world or because I counter ganked them. But I asked, "Why would blizzard have it like this?". After playing LoL, I can understand the pointlessness and problem making that occurs when the enemy is allowed to openly talk to the enemy so openly. Besides, if you love the enemy team so much for plays and what not, wouldn't you think that the end game screen would be a time to do that? I know in my games, I rarely have time to compliment. Even if I do, it's quickly met with people responding back in a negative fashion about another player on their team.
This community has no need for all chat. I'd rather lose the potential friends I'd make from all chat if it means winning more games because our teammates won't have a reason to spend 5 minutes complaining to the other team about our team or how their jungler is a loser for camping their lanes all day. I can't see eye-to-eye with this being a restriction on players.
Aside from that, my duo queue partner got a chat restriction a half a year ago from 2 game reports by the enemy team for the same reason. He didn't say anything in all chat other than "GG" and "Quit spamming all chat" in his two games and it still counted him as punished. I think I showed you that game log when it happened along with a few others. I should've blogged about it. >:/
While people do get reported for non-bannable offenses, I do think the tribunal system is still an alright solution.
I can't cite any sources off the top of my head, but i remember reading somewhere that the tribunal takes into account the strength of the reporter, and the behavior of the person being reported as well. So for instance, if a ne'er-do-well, who always wrongfully reports people, reports someone who's actually innocent, then the tribunal case goes to someone who's more responsible.
Moreover, if the person whose been reported has never been punished by the tribunal, then their case will be assigned to someone whose more responsible in the tribunal.
Now, how do you determine someone whose responsible? Welll that's where the justice rating comes in. If you take a juror like meiyjhe, who i'm sure is responsible, and also has a justice rating of 12839712938467, then your ruling will be most fair
I don't really agree with the tribunal system, though it does do a /decent/ job at what its intended to. I find that's mostly because a vast majority of the LoL community (and online community in general) are relatively immature and simple-minded. And then these are the same people casting judgement on cases, most of which probably don't even read logs/all the logs. Some people can have 1 bad game where they go off on their team or fight with another teammate for calling him a ****ing *** for ruining one play. If someone deserves to get punished based on how they acted in 1 game out of the hundreds they play, I find that call for question/concern.
Either or, a lot of the people I've reviewed, I'd say about roughly 70% deserve the reports while 15% being questionable and the other 15% being innocent. Most of the innocent games I've seen only had 2-3 reports. A lot of these cases were people shouting at each other in all chat. I call it like I see it.

I never thought about that, but you are right. I love to have a ball with the enemy, if they are at the same wave as me (like talking funny "taunts" to each other), or to start a game with some really bad joke using the name or nature of my champ (i.e for Voli - I'm new with this char so please BEAR with me ; Ali - Remember kids, YOU CAN'T MILK THOSE!! ..and even worse :D).
BUTT - if I take that small amount of fun I have with those few folks who just want to play and have fun (talking about normals), and compare it to those above mentioned rage kids, it really feels like a right thing to do, to disable this chat.
I judge cases as well, and I can confirm this happens a lot. Or - I read the chat, reported player says like one "fck this" or "now that was noob, Ez" and got reported, while his team mate is in all caps rage - and that is obviously OK, because he is losing, so there is no need to report him by the enemy team, as he is benefiting them. (I guess he gets reported by his own team mates, though).
Only reason I have all chat is to see if someone on the enemy team gets toxic, so I can report him/her and then hope they get a warning/time ban and change.
I wait with compliments for good adversaries for post game lobby, since some of them are such smart pants, they wait till the end of game, or for the lobby, to say EASY, NOOBS. :P
I don't see how this is an issue at all.
What you're saying is basically equivalent to "Since people can't stop themselves from swearing, let's make a law declaring swearing illegal. Anyone who swears from now on will be punished by ducktaping their own mouths."
It's pointless. You're exaggerating a relatively rare occurance.
1. Start seriously judging cases. You'll see how "rare" this thing is.
2. If swearing is not a problem, why if you write any of the rude words in chat, you see them as **** ? If being rude ******* is OK, why the censorship? Just to make this game PG12?
