Arguably Leona could be hard to place because she's rather predictable playing against good players.

I think embracing was saying that thresh and Leona's damage pale in comparison to more mage like supports like karma and vel'koz. Which is true. Thresh and Leona leverage their defensive strengths as a means to trade efficiently

Iunno, I always speak from personal experience. Sona and Lulu seem to do particularly well in my elo, and whenever someone picks alistar they really know what they're doing so he comes off as very very strong I guess
Speaking from experience again, leona is just much too predictable and only really good when used as a counterpick. Braum is alright I guess, though I don't see him enough to make a judgement. Hell, I even see support vel' koz more often than I do braum xD

honestly depends on what your team comp needs.
thresh and leo are always hard to place too cuz they provide nothing in trading beside tanking but they have good engage outside of lane and do well in lane if your enemies misposition
