So GOG finally went about creating a rival to the Steam client.
The open beta just started and it has a base-line of functions, like buying games, installing games, auto-updates, chat and general community features.
It doesn't have many of the extra features that Steam does, but they are currently working on quite a few, some of which are completely unique.

They're also taking feedback.
You can go to their "wishlist" section and vote for the features you'd like to see. The most requested is currently open sourcing the client, which would be huge. I really hope they do go down that path. Desura has already open sourced their client, to great success. Although they don't sell DRM-free games as far as I know.

Here are a couple of features I recommend voting for:

I have very high hopes for this going forward. CDProjekt Red/GOG have shown that they, if anybody, can carry the banner of gaming forward.

I've really been looking forward to the Guardians of the Galaxy MMO.

They won't be able to rival Steam unless they have mega sales and release games that are brand new releases.

They're already as close to Steam as it gets on the PC platform. They're the second largest seller of digital games, last I checked.
So one could already call them "rivals". The client is new however. Which is what the topic is about..

They won't be anywhere near Steam in terms of sales in the next decade or so.
But what they can do however is keep building on consumer satisfaction until they finally reach critical mass. Because GOG does things Steam never will. And consumers like that.

Until they can get there, they will never make Valve bat an eye because Valve knows that Steam will always be ahead of the curb. They need big sales, and the need to release games coming out in 2015.

Well no ****ing ****, Sherlock.
Isn't that just painfully obvious? And irrelevant to the topic in the first place. This is about the client, not the store. I'm fine with deviating, just try to start a more interesting conversation if you do..

I hope this doesn't end up in "This game requires GOG Galaxy for multiplayer functionality". Also a bit sad about the fact that they're probably backporting the Linux client instead of just building a decent cross-platform code base from the start.

If they end up open sourcing the client under a decent license, and they take community patches seriously, I'll hype this forever though. But I'd be very surprised.

I don't think that will be a problem. They seem to be approaching that from the right perspective:

Crossplay

Crossplay-enabled games offer online play between GOG and Steam. Because where you buy your games shouldn't prevent you from playing with friends.
