Given proper timing of the shields, I'd imagine Shen will be one of the most frustrating champs to kill in the right hands.
Of course, your're right about the damage reduction thing, but that only worked on people he taunted anyway, which you're correct in assuming his new W is meant to replace.

Holy **** that shield is busted. They literally just turned
Feint into his passive, made it cost no energy, and made it more OP

i do prefer the new mechanics because old defensive mechanics were "press a button and gain X armor and mr" or "press a button and now you have a hp shield"
things like poppys no jump zone and bards ult are much more fun as defensive mechanics than just getting more defensive stats

Personally, I think his update gives him more in laning instead of split push or tanking...and that spirit blade...holy **** it is huge and ugly!

They basicly removed all of his damage abilities (passive and Q) and range. Been looking at some videos of how he plays now, must say he desperately lacks damage, and i'm talking in tanky top lane standards. Yeah, he's a good tank that can take A LOT in the later game phases, but as a top laner he seems rather ruined. He's pushed to make all in moves, and if he screws up his Q or E, he either wont get the kill or he'll get killed.
I really hope to be proven wrong, but it seems he's a lot more of a support champ now, rather than a top one.

He can hardly utilize his abilities in a solo lane unless he can trade head-on, so even if he had mana it wouldn't have mattered.
He can't equalize trades against ranged opponents without actually going in unless he takes zero damage, which happens only when they only have ranged AAs and they decide to AA a bit every time W or shield is up, which is highly unlikely.
I think he's just going to get poked out of lane in 7/10 matchups unless the jungler stops by.
