Story follows a young magi, a magician who chooses kings, and he was born to choose kings who will follow the righteous path. "Dungeons" have started to spawn around the world and ppl who conquer them gain special powers/weapons. It's a battle between good and bad and other countries to rule the world. The Magi travels the world with his few friends + his djinn (special power/weapon from dungeon).
The show is serious but at the same time lighthearted with a little bit comedy. If I remember correctly, it gets more serious as you watch further. It should pass your wanted features more or less I think.

watch assassination classroom
'When a mysterious creature chops the moon down to a permanent crescent, the students of class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Middle School find themselves confronted with an enormous task: assassinate the creature responsible for the disaster before Earth suffers a similar fate. However, the monster, dubbed Koro-sensei (the indestructible teacher), is able to fly at speeds of up to Mach 20, which he demonstrates freely, leaving any attempt to subdue him in his extraterrestrial dust. Furthermore, the misfits of 3-E soon find that the strange, tentacled beast is more than just indomitable—he is the best teacher they have ever had!'
it becomes surprisingly serious very quickly

What's it about? I very much despite animes who's intent is to be "funny", but I can overlook that if the content is actually interesting.

log horizon is really good. It is about people being trapped in a computer game and building a society. There is enough action to fit your requirements, but the most interesting part is how the people ineract with each other.

Haven't seen Claymore's anime but I highly doubt it's any better than the manga. And that's a bit of a mess in terms of storytelling. A lot of nice qualities, but they're jumbled together into a mess. Wouldn't recommend it.
For stuff I'd recommend I believe Shingeki No Kyojin (Attack On Titan) is a good pick. The anime ****s up the pacing a bit and ruins the ending of the first season, but the core is still good. I would of course recommend reading the manga over watching the anime, but if you prefer watching to reading the anime is not a bad choice.
Then there's Ergo Proxy. Aside from that one weird semi-filler (super weird) episode I loved it. Can be a bit slow/heavy on the conversation at times, but well worth watching.
Coyboy Bebop is a pretty common recommendation. Animation is a bit dated by now, but not awful. My personal gripe with the series is that it doesn't have much of an overarching plot; It's mostly just self-contained stories in each episode. But not everybody cares about that and I do think it's a good series.
There's a character that's pretty much fanservice incarnate in that series. Pretty sure she was the inspiration behind .. whatshername.. the bikini sniper in MGS5.
But if you can deal with that it's a solid action anime.
Lol no.
That's an awful recommendation.
Not only is it a questionable series in general, but when he says "Not: Overly silly ****" I'm pretty sure that should be instantly discarded.

You might like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann if you haven't seen it. It's a bit on the comedic/silly side in some parts, but has plenty of seriousness.
