Yeah chests are really easy to get compared to keys, like with keys it's random, but with chests you literally just need to get an S- or higher with a new champion whenever you have a chest available. There's no reason to rush chests if you don't have the keys to collect them, they're not going anywhere. The only thing I would recommend is to not be sitting on 4 available chests, so that at least while you're not interesting in getting any more, you're still generating some for whenever you do want another chest.
If you have like 1 key shard and 2 chests available, there's no reason to intentionally hunt down those chests. It's just gonna depress you to have 2 chests available with no keys to open them. :P

Since I started leaving the spawn platform for the first time last season, dying has really become easier. It also means you can play champions without global ultimates on a more regular basis. Would recommend.

Even though I faced mostly difficult picks (Malphite, Irelia, Nasus) that have attack speed slows and/or hyper lategame scaling, I was still able to carry via decision making, teamfighting, and a significant impact during mid-lategame, which felt really good. Xin's damage falls off (somewhat) lategame, but his utility does not.
