I only read the first few paragraphs since I don't want to embed knowledge that's outdated, but you seem like you knew what you were talking about. Rebuild it from the ground up, please. :)
It'd be great if you consider my points when developing the guide further more, so people are not scared away from this extremely useful champion;
From what I've played in my current tier (Diamond III), I can safely say that Ivern is an extremely strong champion in terms of utility in late game, and combined with both Rylai's Crystal Scepter & Locket of the Iron Solari, he can give massive shields later in the game. I was capable of nullifying most of a Veigar's min-45 damage from my ad carry which had a pure-damage build (reaching about 1110 AP)
Having a good communication with your team helps you a lot early in the game, as people will tend to counter-jungle by stealing your buffs because they suppose that you already did theirs, which ends almost always in an early first blood in favor of your team if your support wards properly.
His "Brushmaker" is also extremely useful when counter-ganking, so I would say that Ivern focuses mostly in map control in a defensive form (being Rek'Sai an example of an aggressive one) early in the game (counterganking, jungle control, ward control, etc) and in my opinion it is very important to get "Sweeping Lens" and "Boots of Mobility" as soon as you can (not before "Stalker's Blade" though). Being aware of the enemy jungler is essential and will help your team tremendously.
Sincerely, Blaze it Ivern One Love
For the next item i see obs jungle item get tank or ap depending on team comp and damage, and either trakers knife for vision or stalkers blade for catchup.
Boots always ionian boots of lucidity although i see why some might do better than others, again choose this based on team.
I probably just repeated what other people said haha (sorry) but if you want to check some of these players profiles out feel free.
Diamond - (One of the highest mastery points and has a 59% win rate on him) http://lolprofile.net/summoner/euw/0ne%20tr1ck%20pony
Challenger - (Has not played the champion to much but is challenger (most generic thing i could say :P) so i think his imput should still be taken into consideration especially for a solo queue ivern) http://lolprofile.net/summoner/na/Imaqtpie#
Anyways, I had to upvote your guide because I was struggling with this guys, failing every game. I was sure I was playing him poorly. I was building the right items, just not in the right order.
My problem wasn't the build, but the gameplay. I kept trying to be a damage-dealing champion. I hadn't realized he's focused on a supporting role. First game after reading this: Got an S+.
I had to log-in after so long just to upvote you. Thanks a lot!
P.S.: Still reading this through, by the way. I just read the introduction stuff and that was the result.
P.S.2: The mastery section, where it says "It also pairs well with the Tier 4 mastery Perseverance" is linking Garen's passive and not the mastery.
That's such a huge compliment, thanks so much!
From the moment his kit was revealed I knew he'd be a bit difficult for people to get an immediate handle on, and thus, the intent to create an in-depth guide was born. :)
Also thanks for the notes on the guide! I'll get around to fixing that up shortly.
Happy jungling!
:)
I also find that Runic Affinity is a perfect mastery for Ivern and the cunning tree is better for him than Ferocity, but that's more of a preference I suppose.
That's a very good point. I was going over this in my head right after I posted my thoughts on those few items. I do think there's a lot more room for Rabadon's than Nashor's, I just think it's still very situational. You have to be in a position where you're willing to sacrifice your own HP stacking (and some utility) to really commit to that extra DPS and Daisy utility (if your team is doing no damage, you're not being focused enough to justify stacking so much health, etc.).
I do agree with you, though. It's not a bad item at all, I just don't think I could bring myself to consider it as a core item on him. I think if anything, I'd replace Rylai's with it if you feel you really need it. Protobelt is just so nice on Ivern for catch/peel/burst/waveclear, and everything else is pretty staple to his build.
I'm going to adjust my Rabadon's comment on the guide to something along the lines of what I just typed out, and I'll also add it to the potential offensive items on the initial item path. I have limited testing with Runic Affinity, but I definitely see the potential to run it. I'll do some testing and see if I find myself missing out on that early power via the Ferocity tree.
Thanks for the suggestions! :)
I also like to get Ardent Censer, in lieu of upgrading my Hunter's Talisman. I suspect it's a suboptimal choice and I just have a bit of a hard on for the item, but what are your thoughts on Ardent Censer? And on skipping the jungle item entirely?
I don't find Runic Echoes to be very useful, but when I do upgrade my Talisman it's only to get the wards from Tracker's Knife. Whether I skip the jungle item or not, I usually get Rod of Ages as my first item, so that it can stack sooner; I've also found that it helps my early jungle sustain a lot more than a jungle item would. What are your thoughts on prioritizing RoA?
I LOVE that you brought this up. I've been messing around with Ardent Censer as a core item (instead of Rylai's) and have been extremely happy with the results I'm getting:
a) THAT SHIELD, though. On the games I've been building Ardent, I've been maxing E first. It's SO strong. Coupled with Runic Blessings, you're unbelievably slippery.
b) Cooldown reduction. Building Ardent Censer instead of Rylai's grants you 10% more CDR. This gets you to 30%. BUT, Ardent also grants 8% increased movement speed. This, coupled with your 2 Quints of MS, and potentially points in Wanderer, nullifies your necessity for Boots of Mobility, and allows you to take Boots of Lucidity - granting you max CDR!
c) Windspeaker's Blessing. Hear me out. When I was playing a few of these Ardent Censer matches, I couldn't help but feel as though I wasn't taking full advantage of my shield. I tried this keystone out, and to my surprise, didn't find myself missing out on Strength of the Ages all that much. Not only that, but I was able to take advantage of Runic Affinity and Intelligence, and if I'm being honest - this might become his core mastery page for a "support" focused build.
As for the whole RoA situation, I do really enjoy Runic Echoes. That little push in damage is nice, and it helps with wave clear late. That said, I've been building it like this:
1) Upgrade Hunter's Talisman into Stalker's Blade or Tracker's Knife.
2) Build Rod of Ages immediately, starting with Catalyst of Aeons.
3) Finish your jungle item with Runic Echoes.
I do think he benefits greatly from the upgraded smite abilities a lot more than Runic Echoes itself, but I'm not sure at this point if I would stop building it.
Happy jungling!
I also have a bit of a hard on for Rylais, so I'd probably have to make room for that too. Whether I keep my Tracker's Knife and upgrade it or sell it and get a Rabadon's depends on the game, but I almost always get RoA, Protobelt, Ardent, and Rylais. Just my preference so far. His build path is definitely one of the most flexible and fun, compared to other AP champs that just build the same damage items every game. However you feel about Rylais, I definitely think Ardent Censer should be considered for a core item.
I haven't tried Windspeaker's yet. I don't think I'd be willing to give up Strength of the Ages, but the Intelligence might be worth it. I'll definitely try Windspeakers before I make that call. I just wish it worked on Daisy!
