Champion VOs are getting a bit out of hand.

Are they making Champion VOs too complex?

I thought we on MOBAfire could have a little dialogue (Heh, get it?) about the increasingly thorough voice work that is being put into our new champions and reworks. While on one hand, I can see that they are going the extra mile to flesh out these characters, but to me, I think they are going a tad too far with some of these new ones.

I've put together a list of pros and cons for Riot's new direction with how they've been directing the VO's.

Pros:
-Character depth
-Much more rare to hear repeat voice lines 50 times a game.
-New voiceovers for actions like pings or wards on Xayah and Rakan give another auditory indicator for these gameplay mechanics.
-There is a large assortment of lore hidden within some of these lines.

Cons:
-Characters seem to never stop talking with a combination of longer VO lines and them triggering on an increasing number of actions.
-Newer characters are starting to delve into the lolrandom (see; Regular Show humor) and come across as highly annoying (See; Ekko, Galio, Rakan and Xayah).
-Nonstop voice over can be highly distracting.
-Remember Sonic Boom? How the characters would annoyingly say what they were doing as they were doing it or *after* they did it? That's starting to happen with these new VOs. On every single thing they do.

Those are my thoughts on the matter. What do you guys think?

If all those cons are true then I'm going to have to mute my volume....

Have you played many of the new champions or reworks? lol
Some aren't as bad (Warwick, for instance, from my experience), but some are downright annoying (as mentioned, Galio).

Only recent reworked champion I have played is Warwick I believe and I like his VOs.
Haven't played Galio yet.

He's a bit dude-bro-y. A far cry from his previous stoic guardian voice. Many say he is a worthy opponent for Ekko, the reigning champion of annoying dude-bro-y dialogue. I kind of agree.

I wish they made new Galio more scary. He looks too much like a kid's cartoon character.

Agreed. I think what they were going for was the Gargoyle's cartoon aesthetic, but it ended up more of a cartoon than that was. That show had darker imagery. The silly dialogue doesn't help at all.

In general I would say no, voice overs help a lot with the characterization of champions and gives a huge opportunity to explore lore and the role of the champions within their universe. An example of a champion done well recently would be something like Aurelion Sol. It makes sense for him to talk down on everyone and be a complete boss. He has one of the most lines of all champions, but for him it works. An older champion like Skarner is also really well done with less quotes, but quotes with more meaning like "I miss my kind" and "This world is so strange".

Then you indeed have something like Ekko where he talks about the cops chasing him, Twitch with his idiotic lines each time he reveals himself and Jhin with the amazing "They live, until they die!".

Voice overs should fit the champion. I don't think anyone would mind either to hear Ivern's goofy lines, because the entire champion is a goof for example. I don't think anyone minds Veigar's ramblings or TK's talks about wanting to eat people because that is who they are. But I also feel that the coming new champions other than the ones I already mentioned seem out of place. Though their art and interactions make it feel like they are about love but in reality the Xayah quotes are mostly "imsoedgyandboss" and the oh so charming Rakan quotes are like "HEYGUYSIMHERE". Seems to be missing the point to me or I am just not getting it.

Considering length of voicelines, I do not really have issue with the length.

First thing I thought when I saw new Galio was: I guess this is the superman of LoL lal.

Just slightly different from it's original design :D
Change is gooooood

The only thing I don't like is that the older champions I play (MF Janna Leo etc) have like 10 lines whereas new ones have 100.
