As far as top lane melee champs go, for starting out I would recommend Garen, Renekton, Olaf, Jax, Wukong as they are all easy to pick up and feel rewarding as you learn how to better play them. Champions I would recommend staying away from for a little while would be Jayce, Riven, Pantheon, Yasuo as they are very mechanically complex and/or rely heavily on snowballing, which is hard to do until you learn the mechanics. Hope that is helpful information.

Hey guys, just thought I'd update you on my progress since you helped set me on the right path a few months ago.

I just finished my placements (went 4-6) after playing around 200 normal drafts and got placed Silver IV. I've actually switched to the mid/top roles since I've determined that my mechanics are completely abysmal and I can't kite worth a damn. I've been maining Vel'Koz / Swain / Morgana, though if you only looked at my Ranked games, it would look like I'm a Vel'Koz OTP...

Hopefully I don't drop several divisions because the MMR placement system put me too high. At least, that's how I feel considering I was pretty outmatched in every lane matchup during my placement games. It'd be nice to hit Gold by the end of this season, but I guess we'll see how much I can improve over the next half a year.

Anyways, thanks for the help early in my LoL days, your advice definitely helped me figure out the game more!

Ayyy, you picked up Vel'Koz, nice. He's really fun.

I'm sure if you keep up practicing the same champions you'll start getting much more consistent. Remember, if you start losing a lot and get tilted, be sure to take a break and maybe play some normal games until you feel comfortable enough to jump back in. Personally I improved a ton by playing normal games when I started playing, but if you're happy playing a lot of ranked that can be a good option too.

Good luck on your ranked journey! :)
Thanks to Janitsu for the sig!

Yup, Vel'Koz is pretty awesome to play. He sort of clicked for me and I had a lot of success with him almost immediately whereas Swain and Morgana did not have the same results. Normal games have definitely helped me improve a lot because I ended up matching consistently with mid silver / low gold players. Getting my *** beat down in every game definitely taught me how to play safer to come back strong in the mid-game.
