@ The_Nameless_Bard So I don't think we need to delete certain memes posted (because they're memes) but if the admins think we should then I'll start doing that. But couldn't you have muted that channel and stayed on the server? I haven't seen anything else that was homophobic/racist/transphobic or anything like that elsewhere on the server and were it to appear I'd delete it instantly.

@ RottedApples sorry to hear that friend, I know a lot of people here can empathize. Best of luck with your new psychiatrist 🌈

@ MissMaw: I don't want to be in a place where I have to mute an entire channel to avoid memes that make me (or anyone else, for that matter) feel like ****, especially when the general consensus is "that's funny" in response. I don't care if the mods and such don't want to enforce the rules universally (which is why I didn't say a word about it when I left), but I'd rather remove myself than be around the sort of people who think it's funny to make jokes at other people's expense on a regular basis.

I also sorta now wish I hadn't mentioned this at all, because I really didn't want to have a giant discussion about this subject. What's done is done, I really don't give a **** how people want to manage that server, especially now that I'm no longer on it.

Glad to see that disasters are still happening even though I'm not around, which answers that philosophical debate.

The only reason we're discussing it is to see if there's a way to make a compromise for everyone. I've muted several of the channels on the server and on every other server I've been on anyway so I figured flicking a button to mute might be the simplest solution for you (outside of leaving of course). But if you don't want to stay on the server then that's ok too, nevermind.

thank you jhoijhoi for the signature <3

Soooo, getting this back on track with crying: I have an interview soon about some software project (educational) and from what I've heard so far it's just sitting down, experiencing some people looking down on you with from person to person varying degrees of unjustified pretentiousness, asking questions about code they haven't even bothered to look at properly yet (from what I've gathered). Gonna be hard to not just throw some mental jabs and leave if it really ends up going like that.

If I may chime in here for just a second after my long era of silence, why does there have to be a compromise at all? I thought the rules of conduct of MOBAFire--which I presume extend to its Discord server--weren't really about compromising.

Now don't mistake this for a giant "you should treat them the same way as you treated me" 'cause that's what this isn't about, because that'd imply I cared at least a bit. Nor is this about me once again trying to rise to my former "glory"; rising to glory is the first thing I do in the morning. However, it's more about me trying to comprehend this problem.

I always understood that, generally speaking, you shouldn't be insulting people, making jokes at other peoples' expense, saying racist or sexist things, and so on. I thought that this applied at all times, not just in case people would look at it and complain about it. How come the solution to the "I don't like offensive memes" problem is to advise others to not look at it? It just seems a little odd to me, and that's coming from a guy who has in fact done all of these things, and told people to stop whining; live and let live.

That being said, I'm whelmed to be back, although who knows for how long, right?

@ MissMaw: The issue is that I, personally, don't want to be around people who think that kinda stuff is funny (for what it's worth, I recall it was, like, one guy posting all of it). I already exist on the internet, a place where I'm pretty much surrounded by the aforementioned nonsense without a choice on a constant basis. Because of that, when I have the option to do so, I'd rather just remove myself from situations over trying to force people to understand their joke can be hurtful.

I don't think compromises should be made for just me (fairly certain I am the only one to complain at all, but correct me if I'm wrong), especially when I add very little to the server as a whole.

Ah yes, the wonderful world of software development. What language(s) do you code in?

I don't actively code right now (except for university assignments) but I used to use mostly C++ and Vala for some hobbying. Now for this project we were forced to use Java, so regrettably I know some of that as well :^)
(computer hobby time is now put into building a static site for my scouting group using Metalsmith, pretty fun)

Once I get more free time I want to dive into some functional programming and Rust (really love that language's principles, really bad at wrapping my head around it so far)

What about you?

I enjoy the Young Justice reference.

Anyway, this is still applied here. As I've said, I will remove anything that's racist/homophobic and otherwise offensive from the discord, and would have before too were that to have occurred. In general, people don't harass other people or say offensive things and I've only had to kick someone once and that was for spam.

When it comes to the meme channel though I don't think this is still applicable, since memes are.. funny pictures? Or whatever. My point is memes aren't serious and don't represent true thoughts or opinions the way I see it. I love self-deprecating memes for example, but that doesn't mean I want to commit suicide or that I have a low opinion of myself. Likewise, when people post or like something about race/gender equality/gender/sexuality, I don't automatically assume that they are racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic. Maybe they are for all I know, but sharing a meme about it doesn't mean so and I don't consider it an attack on transgender people, homosexuals, women or PoC.

Maybe I'm being insensitive, I don't know, but different people respond differently to these sort of things. When I see a meme about women being inferior, I usually think it's funny. When I see someone making a serious statement about how women are weaker than men, I get annoyed.

I am just one mod though and were the admins to disagree here I'd obviously comply with whatever rules they set.
