He has been better, but I think Rhaast is still super strong with the right items.

What do you mean electrocute is the best option for Rhaast? Seems a bit outdated, no offense

Nice guide especially given that Kayn hasn't been out that long.

I've got about 20 Kayn games under my belt with a lot of loses trying to figure him out (and get the icons) and I'm only now turning out relatively consistent to even good performances, so he certainly takes a while to figure out.

Runes:

Really good point about both portions of Q having fixed damage to jungle mobs allowing you to run full lethality. Definitely going to have to give that a try.

Masteries:

Also going to give Stormraider's Surge a try as I've been running Thunderlord's Decree and getting kited is indeed sometimes a problem.

Just a note that Double-Edged Sword is the only option of the three that increases you damage to non-champions, so it can help speed up your jungle clear.

I agree with you on Greenfather's Gift vs Dangerous Game . GFG does speed up your clear, but once I made the switch, I survived serveral instances where I would have not.

Items:

What are your thoughts on going Death's Dance before Black Cleaver? I ask because I seem to have more success going DD first and often only pick up TBC as a last item.

Given that you have Sterak's Gage as a core item, would you even buy a Maw of Malmortius since only the shield from one will ever proc?

Ability Combos:

Perhaps I missed it, but could you discuss/expand on Kayn's ability combos?

Roughly what I try to do now is use Shadow Step to get in position and if they don't notice me I'll tag them with Blade's Reach from within the wall, then walk over to them and try to dash throuh them in the direction that they are likely to run and to get the full damage from Reaping Slash, then orb walk and auto attack them until my abilities come off cool down or ult them them if I think I can kill them with another rotation and they dash or Flash away.

Incidentally a section on how to use your ult would also be good. Or maybe better yet on how not to your your ult. I had a Cassiopeia with Ghost run me halfway across the map straight into her team, which was awkward.

But I've also had them either panic or not notice that I've ulted them and then walk back into their team which was a free initiation onto their squishy backline.

Requires more testing/Haven't tried it yet:

Post on reddit Kayn mains said that you can Shadow Step then Flash into a wall.

I'm not sure that you you can W + Flash. I've tried it a time or two and it always seem to fail. Does that hold with your experience?

Thanks for the in-depth comment, means a lot.

As you mostly agree with masteries/runes I won't cover them.

Build going DD before TBC ia good in 3 situations. First, you're snowballing so you don't need the HP/Armour shred early, but in the near future they'll have armour so lethality won't be as useful. Second if they have duelists you need to deal with. Pre 3 item Yas, even item Camille, strong Kled... You get the idea. Third when they have several instances of % max HP or % current HP phys/magical damage. If you're not in those 3 situations, TBC is more useful. Keep in mind, if you're snowballing and buy DD instead of TBC you'll have a bias view of thinking "I do better with DD" without taking into consideration you might be snowballing when you do it.

I wasn't clear on the Rhaast Favoured part of the cheat sheet. They're iteme Rhaast likes as they have natural synergy with the playstyle of the skirmisher. You never buy both, and Maw/Gage are not core. If you go down to "Example bruiser build" being more accurate to a full item Rhaast, maw and gage are not mentioned. It's just that if you're SA you usually just need to stack lethality out the yazoo to be useful.

There are not many combo's because Kayn has no animation cancels. His Q/W can't cancel with flash (weirdly his W lets you queue flash, but it won't do anything). His E is a self buff so yes, you can press E and if you flash into a wall you'll go straight into it. Playing kayn for more than 1 match will cover a lot of the ways you go around using your abilities. He has no tricky depth like Graves pre-nerf ult cancel, it's just press ability it does what it says.

A section on using your ult is something I should add, and I will in the next update. Problem was that on the PBE/first week of blind picks (ranked was nearly always banned, I only got him 4 times and again, didn't learn much) people had no idea how to deal with the ult. I got flashes, jumps, dashes and blinks where if they simply waited half a second more they could of escaped. Now that he's been played in the LCS and has been out for a while, there is more depth to Umbral Trespass for both Kayn and his victims.

I appreciate the in-depth response. :-)

Had a game last night where I went 6-2-3 as Kayn, with two relatively early kills and they had a Jax, Yasuo, and Kayn, so I went with Death's Dance first as that fit your description of when to buy it. They then started buying some armor so I bought Black Cleaver as my third damage item.

I haven't much success playing the SA version of Kayn, so I almost always choose Rhast. Though assassin play has never been my strong suite, which may have something to do with it.

Yeah, the ult definitely has some nuances to its use. Case in point I ulted a Talon and he jumped over a wall and I should have reactivated my ult at that time and attempted to finish him off before he jumped over a second wall, at which point my ult timed out and I got left on the wrong side of the wall to finish him. And which side you pop out on can be really important to finishing off a kill or setting up your escape.
