However, after the bug fixes and damage boost to his ultimate when not Rhaast, he became a really good mid game assassin. Now that his passive affects TLD/Duskblade he deals absurd burst damage.
It is a very snowbally playstyle, but that's to be expected from an assassin. I'd say you can straight up go blue form every game and carry with that if you're good with shadow assassin. Rhaast is a lot safer and can fit into more team comps, but assassins are always greedy so Kayn is no exception.
TLDR: Yes, Shadow assassin is viable and underrated in most forms of below masters play.
