I like this guide a lot. Matchups are detailed and ordered (awesome). Just one question: is Dark Harvest viable on Lux too? I mean, she has a good poke and damage, can't it work? Thank you and nice work.

Hi N1!

I appreciate your kind words :) I definitely think dark harvest is a very niche rune! The only issue I have with it is that it can be very stagnant in some games since it really relies on getting the enemy low for a proc and low action oriented games often make dark harvest a wasted rune - where, comet is applicable and will always be useful at all times. However! I think that DH is a good rune if you're in a kill lane or a lane where you know you can be aggressive and have it proc multiple times, so I definitely wouldnt knock it. Also cheap shot + any of the hunter runes are really good on Lux as well! I dont personally have it on my guide as a recommended rune but I have had opportunities to take the rune and if it works for you, please keep doing so!! I also always take this rune on aram since I know its going to be blood bath central lol

Thanks for your question and let me know if you have any further questions!!

So, is the support shielding build actually viable? I really want to be able to play her as an enchanter type, kind of like how Karma does damage but also shields, but I have NEVER once seen somebody play Lux as an enchanter, and only as an AP mage.

LuxTheGreyWarden (64) | July 22, 2022 6:13pm
Hi Nyx!

You definitely can still play her as an enchanter! She is stronger as an AP mage currently because of the durability changes, on top of some changes she got some patches ago. However, her shield is still very strong and viable in a lot of comps and if that build works for you, do it!! Theres many different ways of playing Lux and that's what I love so much about her.

Gotta say I'm a huge fan of the buff build, been super useful the past few games I've played, even ran a 30.0 KDA. Haven't experimented too much with the other but I look forward to doing so. CHeers mate

omg thats absolutely incredible!!! im so happy that build is working for you. I feel like people dont realize the full effectiveness of that build because you can't physically see all of the buffing youre doing to allies but its amazing! Thanks for sharing and good luck in your games <3

Hello Luxeøn,

Just wanted to let you know that your guide is super helpfull! I started playing League of Legends about 3 years ago and used your guide extensively to get a grasp on Lux support and through Lux's eyes learn how LoL works. And even now I sometimes check back on your guide whenever an update is implemented that affects my Lux somehow.

I'm just a silver newbie champion and I mainly go full AP on Lux support. I know this is not your prefered choice, but I feel like I need it to carry my team. Ideally I'm just throwing out some binds and shields here and there and place wards all over the map, but when my team is bad I take a bit more initiative and become more like a 2nd mid-laner that way.

I have a question! Before preseason I used to go Ludens > Horizon > Rabadons > Void and swap Horizon out whenever I needed something like Chemtech Putrifier, Zhonya's, Banshee's or even Cosmic Drive. With preseason came the new Shadowflame and it kind a became my prefered option over Horizon. Since Horizon now (at least on paper) seems less suitable for Lux. But I'm unsure! Can you give me advice on this? What is the better choice in your opinion? Which one should be my default 2nd item? And in what kind of matchups should I build the other? Or should I (under certain circumstances) replace any of my other items to fit both in?

I'm looking forward to your reply! :)

Hi Yanaike,

I'm so happy to hear my guide has been helpful for you!! And haha don't worry, I have that EXACT same mindset! I think and state on my guide that Lux does have the best shield in the game and her support build *should* be optimal, but I go full AP support Lux ALL the time and the buffs to her actually made it a bit better! You can definitely 2v1 a lane as full AP support or even save some games when you can one shot their carry instead of having to rely on a lackluster teammate.

As for your question... This is a REALLY good question! I think this is the issue that a lot of Lux players are having in general right now but here are my thoughts as of now with testing both items: Horizon Focus is a safer item overall and would be better with Lux support having 4 items in most situations (Lux mid is different since you can buy both items!), but tbh Shadowflame is basically just as good and I could even consider them somewhat situational. Let's breakdown the pros and cons for both!

Horizon Focus:
[*] It's very easy to proc the 10% with your Q or E!
[*] It gives you ability haste
[*] VERY good against stealthed targets/players with items like Duskblade - this also counts for keeping vision on Barons + Dragons
[*] If enemies have no magic resist, you may be overcapped and Horizon Focus would be better. For example, Ahri has 34MR at level 9 up to 38 at level 18. 18 from boots, 6 from Ludens, and 5-20 from Luden's Legendary path means you have more than enough pen already (29-44), as enemies can't go below 0MR.

Shadowflame:
[*] It does do a bit more damage within many stages of the game, as well as having a benefit of double magic pen and a bit better stats (more health, more AP). It also makes it to where you can delay Void just a bit longer unless they buy a full MR item and you need it earlier on.
[*] It has a higher AP ratio and Lux does very well with AP scalings.
[*] Gives 50 more health than Horizon, which really isn't that beneficial but just to note.

Hope this little breakdown helps you gage which is better - or in which situations you think the item could be better! Tbh I think they're both pretty suitable and buying one over the other won't be a huge difference.

Hope this helps and let me know if you need any more clarity or have any other questions :)

Hello Luxeøn,

Thanks for your elaborate response!

Based on what you said, I think I'll switch back to Horizon Focus as my default 2nd item then. I think that the additional damage of Shadowflame rarely matters. On the other hand the vision of Horzion Focus is great. It often happens that an enemy flashes and runs away into unwarded areas after being hit by Q or E. Horizon will give me a chance to snipe them with ult when they are close to natural barriers. If it comes to magic penetration, I'll have Void Staff anyway. Shadowflame might still be a situaltional item in case the enemy has a lot of melee champions or relies havily on shields, or maybe as a 4th item instead of Void, if the enemy doesn't build magic resist at all (which happens quite a lot actually).

Thanks again and good lux in your games!

Hi Luxeon. I'm Gold 1 Lux support main, and this is really awesome in-depth guide about Lux support. I was thinking of making a Lux support guide, but there is no point now since you got it covered - good job!
I'd like to share my opinion mainly on matchups, from my 280+ ranked solo games with Lux support. I climbed with her from Silver 3 to Gold 1 this season.
Mostly, I agree with you, Luxanna has the best botlane synergy with Jhin, Ezrael, Cait, ect. but some I dont agree with couple of statements you made.
I dont think Lux is any good with Twitch (you stated that if you land your q after lvl6 on 1 or 2 enemies they should be dead, but thats pretty much the case with any champion). Twitch just wants to survive lanephase, he has great scaling and he needs someone who can peel. Yeah, Lux can peel but I think there are far better options to pick with Twitch and I dont think Lux has any synergy whatsoever when paired with Twitch.
Next, Kogmaw - same thing.

Kalista is another adc which shouldnt be paired with Lux, her ultimate will be useless, as you stated, unless you get too close to enemy - which you shouldnt do whoever you play with. I'm kinda onetrick Lux support and I still pick Alistar when I see my teammate wants to pick Kalista, so that should selfexplain this ''combo''.

But, I think with Vayne, its a pretty good combo, even tho you dont really have a combo. Ok, so let me explain. Vayne wants to survive early and with Lux q and poke she can survive, and in lategame a good Vayne player is used to peel for himself so Vayne dont really expect you to peel for him. Plus, you both have extreme scaling since I pretty much go full AP Lux, ofc with support item and vision wards. Often, I dont even buy 6th item so I can have space for vision wards in deep lategame.

With other adc synergy, I strongly agree, but I must point out that I didnt have much ''luck'' when I play with Jinx, but its probably that things didnt work out for me and my adc since, in theory, it should be a really nice synergy.

As for counter goes, you explained some of the matchups well, but I consider most of the matchups and skill based. So if Morgana is better at landing her Q than you - you'll pretty much lose the lane. If you land it better than her - you should be able to win the lane.
Pure skill matchups, in my opinion, are vs: Bard, Brand, Janna, Morgana, Nami, Rakan, Sona, Soraka, Vel'Koz, Xerath, Zilean, Zyra.

So, as I explained with Morgana example, all you got to do is know how to play vs these champs, with Morgana you can bait her q if you walk out of the minions and be quick enough to dodge it (if anyone is reading this, dont try this unless you think you can dodge it 99%) and then go in and try to make a play. Dont q when her shield is up. And I could do a short review of every ''pure skill matchup'' list I wrote, but I think you get the point. When you get experienced in one lane, you'll have a pretty good idea when Nami mains are going to try to land that bubble, when Morgana will try to land her Q ect, and you can use that in your advantage to dodge their spells and then be aggressive. When playing vs Bard mains, always know that they will try to Q you, if you are near (you should be) when they get out of the tunnel after they are finished roaming, be prepared and make sure you dodge it and then try to land your Q. E should be an easy skillshoot in this case since you just have to place it on the exit hole of his E while he's traveling to that point. It's just another case of skill based matchup.

On the other side, I find Taric and Shen really easy to play vs, because Taric stun and Shen taunt have really small range, range which you should never be in, if you play your Lux right.

With Thresh its all about not getting yourself in his Q, which shouldnt be that hard since it has a long delay time after its casted.

Talking of experience, Zilen mains always try to ult when their adc are at less than 10% hp, which is logical, - dont kill them then. You can see when he ults because glasses (?) appear around a champ he ults, just wait until it goes away, then their adc will be at really low hp and try to finish him, hopefully with your ultimate. It really worked for me couple of times, although I rarely play vs Zilen support. Next thing, his bombs are dodgable, and if you or your adc pick one then you can completely deny its damage with your double shield. If he gets you with double bomb - you are doing something wrong. And when he wants to get his passive to his adc he must stand in place and cant cast spells, perfect for you to sneak your combo if you are in range.

Finally, Leona. The ultimate counter to Lux support. Or is it? Other than trying not to be in her E range, which is kind of logical, there is another really useful tactic. I always use it, and if you do it right, you are in favor of winning the lane vs Leona! But you'll need a help of adc. Tell him to push the wave so you pick lvl2 1st, poke her at lvl1 because she is useless then, and that shouldnt be hard to do because she is going to go for those minions to get her ward quest. Try to poke adc is possible too. By the time she gets lvl2, she or her adc, should have lower hp than you and your adc, and you should already have lvl2, so if she goes all in on you or your adc, you'll gonna make her pay. Couple of games ago, I played vs insane Leona support (I checked his match history after the game, he had like 13-14 winning streak on ranked solo with Leona, and he always played with his adc premade, just like in my game) and me and my adc still won the lane. We got 1 for 1 on 4v2 LVL 2 teamfight on bot, which is great. They did get 1st blood, but when you get 1 for 1 in 4v2 teamfight its just great. We ended up killing them 2 times on bot in 2v2 teamfights which were 2 for 0 in our favor and got 1st blood turret on bot. Their jungle did gank couple of times which ment they had some kills, while our jungle prioritized other lanes. But the point is, Leona doesnt mean you are hard countered, even if you play vs a really good Leona player. However, its a bit risky, because stupid luck like you and your adc leashing while enemy botlane doesnt, could make your lane a living hell.

When you learn how to counter Leona, Alistar shouldnt be a problem, since he's pretty much the same all in concept, but Leona's ultimate will make you more troubles in lane rather than Alistar ultimate.

And as for my build, I go full AP, and its working for me so far, since I have 5.1 / 5.7 / 13.6 KDA out of 129W and 95L with full AP Lux support in this season. I buy AC when I feel like I play with really good 4 teammates, but I rarely feel that. I like full AP build since I like the pressure, I like to engage teamfights if I land a Q on their squishy, following my full combo, and usually we win 5v5 teamfights like this. I really feel great after those plays, since I have a feeling I was the key factor in crucial teamfight of the game which led my team to victory. However I dont recommend this build to unexperienced Lux players. That being said, if I ever get to Diamond, I'm 100% sure I'm not going to play full AP Lux, if I play her on support at all :D

Dont get me wrong, I love your guide, I just wanted to share my opinion based on my experience which I think should be valued because I'm AP Lux support main who plays ranked and climbs, which you probably dont see often, but it probably indicates that I'm doing something right :D
And I know you know all of these things I wrote, but I just wanted to state them if anyone else is reading this, perhaps to help them in mastering Lux support, and who knows, you might like something I wrote and add it in your guide. These are some tips that I was saving to write in my guide but, as I said, I wont be making one since we have in-depth Lux support guide which got it all covered up. Again, fellow Lux main, great job!

Hey again Luxeøn and thank you so much for answering. I really appreciate it because I couldn't find tips for Lux supporting from higher elo players, and I searched a lot. I'm just a college student and casual league player which didnt spent any money on the game but I was considering paying some higher elo player to give me some advice about Lux support, thats how badly I wanted this kind of comment. I've read your comment couple of times so I was sure I dont miss on something and again thank you so much for answering and making this fantastic guide.
Sorry if I wrote my 1st comment in a confusing way because some of those statements I did address to you so I can read your opinion on them, like adc synergies, and others like tips for laning vs counters I addressed to other players who are interested in Lux supporting, if they come across my comment. Of course I know you know everything about laning vs Leona for example, and you know it much better than me, so dont think I was trying to be a smart*** explaining to you how to lane vs Leona, I was just explaining to others because I think it could help them.

I think our main disagreements are because you're much higher elo and we build Lux support differently.

For example, you rushing Ardent with Kog'maw in lane makes synergy with him decent, while my AP build isn't really that great with Kog'maw.

With Kalista, Lux is kinda okay, not a disaster but surely not a perfect mach and I think we both agree with that. I must admit I rarely see Kalista on my team since she's hard to play and has low winrate considering all ranks a the moment. She is really unique adc and I feel like my adc cant show his best Kalista game if I pick Lux. That being said, Lux and Kalista lane could work out pretty well.

With Vayne, again I agree, she's just the best adc with Lux among all adc who dont synergies with Lux, in my opinion. The best out of bad combos I guess :D

About Jinx she does synergies with Lux pretty well and I know it, its just my personal experience that me and all of my Jinx adc's weren't on the same page in lane.

Now for lane matchups, my opinion is that every champion has couple of hard counters, and couple of champions he hard counters, and all others are skill-based. And on those skill-based there are some easier and some tougher matchups but in the end most of it comes down to skill. It comes down to skill in my elo, and elo lower than me, but in your elo overall game knowledge gets much better and even those slight advantages in lane, like Rakan has vs Lux, do make much difference, because players are aware of that and mistakes being made comes down to a minimum. Making in-depth guide would consider a scale of matchups, which you did, its just that almost everyone in yellow part of the scale I put together in one group - skill-based, because from my elo and my point of view it pretty much is the truth.
You placed Rakan and Thresh perfectly, they can cause much trouble, but if you (whoever is reading this, not addressing to you Luxeøn :D) and your adc play it right it can feel like they arent really countering you.

I faced just 2 Xerath support players while climbing to Gold 1 and I stomped both of them, they probably just got autofilled, and the reason I dont think he's much of a problem is because he gets really slow while casting his Q, you know he'll be aggressive while doing that - going towards you, so Lux can sneak her combo then. He's really squishy and has no escape mechanism so should be an easy target once you bind him. I rarely see him in midlane on my soloQ games and its even harder to find him as a support, and when I do face Xerath support thats probably an autofilled guy which makes your life in lane much easier. I think that even a Xerath midlane main would need at least 100+ games of him in support role to learn all the matchups and to learn how to play him as a support and honestly there aren't many players like that in the world. That's why I put him as an easy lane, but yeah you are right, if its evenly skilled players he can cause you trouble.

As for Shen, I cant remember when I faced Shen support, you probably see them much often because it makes sense in higher elo because of his taunt and ulti, but in lower elo people are more focused on carrying rather than having life-saving ultimate for your teammate, wherever he is. Experienced Shen supports would probably just try to avoid the poke and wait for botlane teamfight to flash + taunt which is really a threat, and which would place him in the yellow part of the scale. In lower elo I guess you can make him use his flash defensively which would make your chances of winning a teamfight much greater since its taunt is almost melee range.

For Leona, we both agree, she is really a hard counter but I found a tactic which works really good and if executed well. About Morgana and Zilean I was just making examples of knowing what to do and knowing when Morgana mains and Zilean mains play their champions and use their spells. But it looks like I didnt face a really skilled Zilean player yet :)

I did forget to mention that I find it hardest to play vs Karma, Lulu and Blitz. Karma and Lulu because they both have shields and MS boost which can sustain my poke or help them or their carry to dodge it, they do have kit to poke me too, and Lulu ultimate makes my ulti do 0 damage. With Blitz it all comes down to dodging his grab, but if me or my adc dont avoid 1 grab, we're dead. He has similar kit like Leona, Thresh or even Alistar, but among all of them I find him the hardest to play against. Again, maybe its just me and maybe I just faced Karma/Lulu/Blitz players who are overall better and more skilled players than me.

Now for the build part, I'm completely aware of why you dont build her the way I do and it just doesnt work in higher elo. While I was getting closer to Gold this season, where I've never been before, I didnt know what to expect in Gold so I signed up to reddit just to ask can I play full AP Lux support in Gold too, like I did in Silver, and climb with her. Honestly, I was expecting comments that I cant and I need to find a new main, which I even started considering, but I got couple of replies and all of them said that I should continue playing Lux this way as far as I can and since it works for me. Those answers really surprised me, and now I'm 30LP away from Platinum promo so I should thank those guys who encouraged me to continue playing AP Lux supp. I'm completely aware that, if I continue climbing, I would either have to change my main or build Lux like you do. Being flamed in lobby for picking Lux support from 3 players, and getting 3 honors after that game just gives me more confidence to continue this way as long as I can.

Again, thank you so much for taking time for answering me, your comment and opinion really helped me out a lot, and I cant wait until you start streaming. I never watched twitch streams of other players before, but you'll be the 1st and probably the only one I would watch :D
