There are a few questions in here, so let me try break them down an answer them.
This is 100% a viable option, and it is one I find myself using from time to time. It all depends on my matchup. If it is one where I need to avoid skill shots early, I prefer to take the
MR Runes
I usually take MR runes as I build a lot of armour in my build, so it makes up for the lack of MR a little bit. Again, it depends on the opposing team. Against an all magic team, I would highly recommend it, but against an all AD team, definitely change it to armour.
Blade/Sabre
I always take Blade. It provides extra CC so is great for helping land abilities. If you E onto someone, and smite as you land, its impossible for them to avoid your ulti without flashing.
