Little question... What's your opinion in Catalyst 1st item into regular build and RoA rush Taric as support? (After all, Catalyst rush is pretty common in Taric Top players). Do you think it slows your completed items power spike too much or is it worth building in close range lanes where your only limit is your small early game mana pool?
On the other hand... What do you think about Bramble Vest as a situational item? Of course it lacks of any other useful stat other than armor but I've been getting it in between Zeke and Vow if the enemy has at least two champions with healing skills/runes/items.
I can only suggest going for Rod if you have a solid lead in lane. It's a pretty big investment, both in gold and the time it takes to scale. It does slow down your other power spikes, which is notable in games which call for other completed items first--for example, if you need a Vow or Locket to protect your team. In short, I'd say Rod is a luxury pickup that makes your great games even better. Catalyst alone will often suffice when you're in a situation where you want the stats and passive to fight with.
As for Bramble Vest, that's a good point you bring up. I haven't tried it out myself and might do so now. It could work great if you're able to be in people's faces and brawl a lot, similar to Catalyst but more aggressive. Definitely sounds viable in games where there is a decent amount of healing on the enemy team.
RoA is such of a high risk-high reward item IMO, but not in the traditional meaning of risk. I only consider it worth taking in really long games, but do to needing to be charged some times I have to make the guess of how long the game is going to be based on champs and map state. If it's min 15 and all turrets are up and healthy I may consider it, but if any of the lanes are down it's just not worth it for me. I haven't done the math but I think it starts outscaling the other options with 6 charges or so, but we have support income, so I you end up getting the RoA really late. If you get ahead and you have the gold (which should solve the "too expensive" problem) there's no reason to get RoA since you basically will be wasting your lead in exhange of late game power, but why do that at all when Zeke & Vow can be a lot better at forcing early fights.
And when it comes to Bramble... It's either a "don't bother AA'ing me" sign to the enemy ADC if they are AS based or a "you don't have half or your kit" for the enemy enchanter. Now I think about it it can really turn a mirror match up to your favour, right? Like, this not happen in ranked but in a Taric vs Taric cutting both his AA damage and Q healing really hinders him dowm.
The value I see in ROA is in the boost to Taric's healing. The health and AP increase it by a pretty substantial amount. I'd say it's worthwhile versus AP champs especially, where armor items like Vow wouldn't always cut it, also when you still want to be somewhat tanky but also deliver great heals. I'd say ROA is never necessary, but it satisfies some niches, including if you're ahead but still forsee a longer game.
Bramble could certainly be good in those situations, mirror matchups included. Melee supports in general it wouldn't be bad against. GW on them means the ADC's heal won't help them as much.
I don't know if Bramble is staying or not this preseason but I will assume it is since they added an executioner's call to the mages in the reworked orb that is in the morello build path, right? So ADs have EC, APs have that Orb and tanks have BV.
This preseason is gonna be rough tho. I still have no idea what I'm going to build neither on Taric nor Rakan, I think nobody does. While ADCs and Assassins are having upgraded new toys supps are getting item reworks and rebalances instead of power ups.
-PoM rune changes
-The continuos Guardian nerfs that make it a subpar rune but the lack of any other alternatives than Aftershock in the support side of things.
-Catalyst gone and Tear now being a starting item that only grants mana on champion hits. (casting no longer grants the mana and I may be wrong but I think minions don't proc it neither).
-Incresed damage and tank penetration items in the meta that are basically a counter to armor stacking.
I really hope some tanks items make up to what we will lose preseason. But I think that enchanters didn't get the top tier items and Taric is this weirdo who is the only melee enchanter apart from Rakan but he is also the only who benefits more from tank stats than AP. I love them both (Rakan and Taric) but preseason looks scary, ngl. At least Staff of Flwoing Water is an item Rakan would love to rush in a lot of matches, I haven't seen any clear alternative so far for Taric.
Also: A little correction. Tear grats mana in minion hits. It just doesn't grant mana when skill casts and does not hit anyone.
