You are right. It is REALLY hard and slow to jungle with Yi before you have the appropriate runes / masteries. I would focus on using him in the lane, and please don't alpha strike every cd. It pushes the lane up and makes you vulnerable to ganks. :) I only alpha strike creeps when they're at my tower to help me get last hits where the tower will easily take them.
Also keep in mind that the guides that have a complete set of 6 items are there to show that if a game lasts that long, what you should buy. If the game isn't really long, you won't have full items. If you're having trouble getting enough gold try starting off with a cheaper item like
The Brutalizer rather than going straight for an
Infinity Edge. I hope that helps! :)

The main rule of Master Yi that i follow is "Always be killing something" Always! Even if your team is preparing a storm on tower and they are struggling with crowded mid you shouldnt be there just running around waiting for innitiation, you should be in the woods (other lanes?) farming farming farming.
The point in my guide is that i go
Berz boots/Stark/PD/IE
On a 25min mark if i dont own a full PD that means i was slacking so i make a Zeal and go for IE already finishing PD when i can.
Focus on utilizing your double strike. Jungling isnt the best way of getting exp/lasthits for Yi imho. But it is a safe way. Just remember to gank each time you got a red buff. This slow should be all you need early game to get kills even before lvl 6.

I thought you were supposed to harrass with alpha strike?
It is dangerous to harass with alpha strike because it also hits the nearby creeps, and will therefore push your lane further towards the enemy turret. This will make you more vulnerable to enemy ganks and make the enemy in your lane safer because they can hug your turret. I would only alpha strike to harass if the enemy lane is auto attacking their creeps / pushing the lane, so that your push will even out.
Make sense? I can explain more if you want.

Hm..I've been playing (with all chars not just Yi) to try and kill as many minions as possible to push to the enemy tower..that way when you get a kill or double kill in the lane you can easily take a lot of whacks at the tower early-ish game and potentially knock it down..am I "doin' it wrong"?
You're doing it wrong, haha. Look in my FAQ at the section about last hitting, and I think that should explain it well. You can find the link in my sig that says "New to LoL? ..." It's generally regarded as a bad idea to push the lane up, and last hitting is one of the things that separates the noobs from the pros. You should learn to play by just hitting the minion when it has the very last sliver of health on the minion and therefore getting the "last hit" and the gold.

That is true, I would just try my best and only alpha strike if they're pushing too. It's not worth possibly losing the exp by dying and feeding the other team a gank. I personally jungle with him most of the time though I know you can't do that, but I have gone mid and been successful in lane as well. Low levels it's not as big a deal to push because they often won't have a jungler, or be less coordinated, but I just feel like pushing with your spells is a bad habit to get into.
I'm on US, name is Mowen, if you want more help or maybe play a game with me to see how you do. I am by no means a pro yi but I've been playing him a lot recently and getting to be decent with him.

First poster, lvl 10 ^_^
Just purchased Yi to try him out - been looking over the guides here and the amount of items he needs to purchase is insane...even in games where we crush the other team I don't even get half or 2/3 of the way through. I do jungle a lot when I can but ofc I have to help gank etc.
As an aside - is it general that you can't really jungle till you have runes + lvl 30? Cause I just went out with normal Yi starting jungle build and cloth armor + 5x health pots and almost got killed by the 2 stone giants even with smite O.o
Thanks!
